How do you feel about the game's current difficulty?

Personally I liked the old difficulty more. Certainly there were bugs in the difficulty level before, (like the flying enemies who could two hit or one hit k.o. at times, which I'm glad they fixed) But I feel like game's slope towards an easier overall difficulty has taken some of the adventure and "thrill" from the game. I don't want to seem like a whiner, because I still really love this game. The fact that the developers listen to the problems of its players and take action right away, is very great. However I feel like most of the people who were complaining about the difficulty wanted a cookie cutter game, which I believe takes away so much of the magic from the video game. Feel free to disagree, I just want to know how other people are feeling about this.

I just really think its gotten much easier, and that is slightly disappointing.

I wish to go back to the days of armor penetration and mobs that -gasp- actually dealt damage.

Game is... ridiculously easy now. It's saddening.

    I completely agree.

I think that it's settling in to a nice respectable "normal" difficulty. Not too hard, not too easy.

I really only just got the game at the end of the armor penetration era.

But, I would very much like the game to be more difficult than it is now.

Space is meant to be terrifying, dangerous place. We have absolutely no idea about what's out there. Could even be planets inhabited by Dinosaurs.

I have never expected this game to be a gentle walk amongst the faeries and rainbows.

Game is listed as an: Action, Adventure, Casual, Early Access, Indie, RPG.

Casual, and Early Access are the two key points here.

Casual games are meant to appeal to a wider audience, not just the hardcores who love being punished in their games.

Early Access, Past difficulties were tweaked, because obviously the above didn't apply. Game isn't released yet, but when it is, don't expect it to be Demon Souls. I'm sure mid-endgame will have a better difficulty curve by launch.

I'd hardly say having to actually put effort instead of just time into the game is being punishing.

I found it more difficult that Dark souls, but you get the idea.

I didn't say anything about any of that. Just pointing out what should be expected with a game that's aiming for a wider audience than just the hardcore players.

I feel like it's being balanced and that on full release their will be variation in difficulty settings. I personally don't like the current difficulty.

    "This thread is just toxic.

Guys, we're going to do our best to make gameplay fun for everyone. Finding a happy balance here. Doesn't mean we're going to nerf everything to death and it also doesn't mean that everything is going to be DARK SOULS: PREPARE TO DIE EDITION level of hard.

That's pretty much all there is to say about it. Take all "Hardcores vs. Casuals" arguments elsewhere-- we're all just in it to have fun. Thanks!" - mollygos, Dec 9, 2013 Post #399

Pretty much my thoughts as well. I suppose a difficulty selector would be nice, though. Options are always a good thing in my book.

Numerically speaking, I enjoy things as they are now. There are no one-shots unless things royally screw up, but it is still very possible to die if you run into an unexpectedly tough enemy or get too complacent.

However, I wouldn't mind additions of skill based difficulty. Enemies and hazards that force you to play more skillfully in order to avoid harm or defeat the foe.

Simply jacking up the damage sucks and I will never support it. On the other hand, providing enemies that have interesting skill-based challenges, such as hitting them during vulnerability windows, or from specific directions, or even with certain weapon types; or having to dodge projectiles or physical attacks with unique trajectories, or coping with an enemy that has an unusual movement menthod (such as crawling on side or back walls, or teleporting) would be excellent.

One, what are with people's obsession with that games difficulty? Gasp, a game where you actually see the game over screen? Well I guess as David Cage would say, game overs are a failure of a game designer and not the players!

But seriously. The new genre of videos games that appeal to "casuals" is such an annoying excuse to just make a game boring. Game developers want a lot cash, I get that, so they need to appeal to a wider audience. However the game was on the right path and at the complaints of people who couldn't take the time to learn about the game's mechanics or to take the time to even be skilled at the game instantly complained about its difficulty.

I don't feel that Starbound is a game that even rewards effort. It's more of a game where putting the time in is where you reap you rewards.

Not too much effort needs to be put in if you don't want to put any in, but putting the time in, is the effort in games like these.

Sounds fair enough for a casual game to me.

These are just my opinions though, and I'm trying to explain them as best I can.

It's actually people who try to keep games for themselves rather than branch out that ruin gaming. Just because we play games at any difficulty and can manage doesn't make us entitled to them all. That's such a poor attitude honestly.

There's nothing wrong with a Gameover screen, but Starbound isn't one of those games regardless.

Starbound is far from boring, and it's pretty casual (and getting more so). There's nothing wrong with a game you can just boot up and be able to relax in, and make your own fun/do whatever you want.

I don't think you're the person to be saying what path the game should be taking, and what the right path for the devs to take Starbound is, personally.

I understand that games can branch out to more people, but when almost all games are now being made so that you need not to put any effort in them, wheres the games for the people like me? I'm I not allowed to have my opinion just like you have yours? So, I'm not the person who can say what path the game should be taking, but you are?

    Seems pretty pretentious to me.

Putting words in my mouth friend.

I've not once said your opinion didn't matter.

I've simply taken the information I currently have at my disposal, just as we all do, and can come to a conclusion on what Casual gaming is and what it means. I'm also able to look at the dev patterns and see the way they are going with their game as of right now. It's not that hard.

"Almost all games" is a bit of a stretch. There are plenty of games that are aimed at hardcore gamers, only thing is, now casual games are becoming an abundance as well. Nothing wrong with that. I can enjoy games of all types.

I don't know about you, but as a hardcore gamer, I find no shortage of games to enjoy. Casual or otherwise. If you however personally can't enjoy a game because it doesn't meet your standards of difficulty, effort required, or anything else, and the direction the game is going isn't to your liking, the simple thing would be to say it isn't for you.

Just because people who are really into difficult games requiring plenty of effort stumble across Starbound, which again, is listed as a Casual (and is getting more so with updates) and they find it too easy, doesn't mean the game is going to be made to suit their desires. Like I said, just because we can play difficult games, adapt well to them and have no problems, doesn't make us entitled to every game we set our sights upon.

Ah... Mr. Pot, nice to meet you.

It's no one's place but the devs to say what path the game should be taking. Yes, this is a public forum, and you are free to post your opinions about the course of the game. But if you want to get angry about it when folks don't agree with you about it, then I suggest that you might find a different outlet for that.

And you definitely shouldn't start a thread asking for people's opinions, and then shit all over them when they're posted. That's just bad form altogether.
