How do worlds work in multiplayer?

    How do they work because I've run the server from the Starbound launcher and after that I closed the server but the world saved itself.And I tried to play singleplayer with my character that I played multiplayer and it crashed so how do the worlds work from singleplayer to multiplayer and the other way around?
