Will the method be like in Terraria ? where we need to use I.Ps ? cause it kinda sucked, I can't seem to allow others to connect to my world using my I.P. Have to use Hamachi....I hope that there is an alternate way that StarBound can use for us players to connect together in Multiplayer :)

  2. At the moment, the ingame page looks like the terraria one : a box in which you need to write the ip you want to connect to. Remember it's still work in progress, so i suppose it's not the final version :3

I really hope it's different from Terraria, because I was really pissed at what players need to do to connect to a world....I hope it will work in ways like maybe in like Borderlands 2 ? where you just click invite or join game etc.

btw out of topic, but how do you download your own character from the Character Creation thingy ? I can't seem to save it though

  4. Indeed Borderland 2 is really great to start a multiplayer game. Maybe you will have your IP shown when you start a server, so you just have to give it to the other people so they can join your server.

For the Character Creator, you just have to save it where you want, and change the .part extension into .png :3

I heard a dev mention possibly using Steam tools to set up servers. Or at least I think it was a dev. Anyway that could make things pretty easy.

I really hope so it's like in Borderlands 2...I really don't want to use Hamachi and putting the risk of turning off my firewall so people can join my game.

Yeah, I already asked about this a while back, Terraria required the sacrificing of an infant born of immaculate conception to connect. :yeahhhh:

Some proper port forwarding and opening of the right ports in your firewall and you won't need Hamachi. The way of connecting to servers in Terraria is just the same as every other game, standard and pretty efficient.

Hot joinable games via Steam's friends list would be pretty damn amazing for a game of this type. Multiplayer has to be hosted on a server which is a different peripheral than the game itself. Just like with Minecraft and Terraria. Whether or not you can just simply 'invite' someone to join the server you're playing on with Steam mechanics is still pretty up in the air but I'd have to say it's incredibly unlikely.

Hosting/Joining servers on games like Terraria, Counter-Strike, or anything with user hosted servers isn't complicated at all. Just requires said host to do a little reading (if you lack the prior knowledge) and capacity to understand how port-forwarding functions. Most games use this method to connect to mutliplayer servers it's not over intrusive and is standard across the majority of the PC gaming spectrum (games that aren't MMOs and Starbound is not a MMO) as stated above. There's always a way around hosting issues, you just have to find the right solution for your network set-up, sometimes it could be as easy as toggling something off or on.

But you know what, who knows, maybe they'll have server lists like other Steam games. Even more unlikely than the previously stated but crazy shit can happen sometimes.

Even something like server list requires a central public server. But its traffic would be much less than full public world server.

If you don't know how to host a multiplayer server on Terraria, you will not be able to host it on Starbound either. So now is the time to study networking a bit, ask questions in tech support and so on. Every computer can port-forward, or play in multiplayer even if it means joining someone else.

I hope ther is both a lobby were you can have your server show up for people to join and a box were you can enter direct IP.

If you're using Internet Explorer, it won't work. Once you download it, you have to make the name "download.png" so your computer will recognize it as an image.

I just hope they will not be port forwarding , hamachi blablabla involve in multiplayer...let's be honest, we are lazy people, we just want to either open steam overlay and invite friends or like the way that Borderland uses. NOT saying Terraria multiplayer sucks, I love Terraria and I hope SB can raise the bar, just to point out IN CASE people misunderstand and think I hate Terraria. BTW Thanks for all the replies guys and prolly girls

Being able to connect directly through Steam would be amazing. I loved the heck out of multiplayer Terraria but it was such a pain to get everyone into the server. There's always one person who can't connect and you spend hours googling to find out how to fix it

Oh, and being able to play with a local host over LAN would be cool too!

Yeah, a serverlist requires a masterserver. usually fans make their own serverlists anyways. Doom sourceports with multiplayer for example have DoomSeeker and IDE(Internet Doom Explorer)

On a semi-related note, will we be able to decide what port is used?
