I'm using Graphics Gale to make a few sets of custom armor and vanity items based on Post Apoch themes. Can anyone help me through transparency layers and all that jazz?
Hmm, everytime I shorten the sleeves on something or try to make negative space it shows up white in the game instead of not at all. There is also a visible alpha layer. Also, try to be less condescending.
Starbound doesn't have "transparency layers", everything's a simple PNG. Graphics Gale is a pretty shitty program for manipulating transparent PNGs, while it is possible, it's a lot more irritating to do than in say, Photoshop. And I doubt you'll find much help around here on it because it's so rarely used considering it's, you know, Japanese. Download GIMP, you'll have less of a headache doing the sprites for Starbound and more people can help you.
I think what you might be running into is an issue with mask files. If I'm not mistaken, Starbound uses mask.png files which behave in the same way you'd expect layer masks to work in Photoshop. Black areas are treated as entirely transparent where as white areas are treated as opaque. I'm not sure if greyscale is readable in Starbound, however. Try reviewing other armor sets, and their mask.png files, to familiarize yourself with their setup and to see if you can't learn from their mask.png files to better understand how to incorporate them into your own designs.
And this is where I tell everyone that Rhopunzel uses Gale mostly and Photoshop for transparency stuff.
No it doesn't? The mask.png only applies to helmets to make parts of hair disappear. And considering the entire Starbound sprite sheets are "transparency stuff"...
...more specifically Gale does straight transparency and alpha channels just fine. It's a two click process. Translucency, partial transparency, is what PS and GIMP are for.
i tried a few, gimp = meh, graphicsgale = good, but try to figure it out, asprite or something = meh, photoshop = good paint.net = good, that's what i use MS paint = nope you can but nope and a few small other ones, nothing what really sticks out. I stick to Paint.Net it's easy to use and does the job quite well.
