How do I read previous messages?

Sometimes when I am doing a mission, or even exploring, helpful messages pop up on the bottom left corner of the screen. However, these messages can be very poorly timed in a game that cannot be paused, and I can't read them before they disappear. Where can these messages be found after so that I may read them again to make sure I didn't miss any vital information?

 

press the enter key. SAIL messages are left in the chat box.

...Is there any way to read them if you've already left the game?

 

I have the same exact question, why does the log disappear when the session is closed? It is saved anywhere or is there a mod to keep it across sections? It should only be a few Kbs!
