How do I convince my friends give Starbound a chance?

As we are all loving fans of Starbound, I'm sure most of you would want to play with some friends. The problem I have is that none of my friends have played Terraria nor have they played any games that are the same 'genre' as Starbound. It's pretty hard to get my friends' interest since Starbound doesn't have any trailers showing much gameplay and I'm pretty sure they don't want to watch the livestreams since those videos are lengthy. So I showed them Terraria's trailer and told some of them it's 'going to be something like that, only a lot more diverse and better.' but as most people have said with Terraria in the past, it seemed like a 2D Minecraft and they said that Minecraft was boring if you're not into building. They did say the music was awesome though.

I tried to explain that Starbound will focus more into exploring and fighting and if someone is in to building things, they can do that as well. In the end I just told them that if they're interested in trying something new and different, then buy it, if not, your loss. Anyway some of you might say that it's only 5 bucks but I live in Malaysia and thats about 15 Malaysian bucks here and some of them would rather save the money instead of buying a game they have no clue if they will even like it or not. I can't be the only one with this problem, am I..? Maybe I'm just not very good at explaining. :(

TL;DR, I can't seem to convince my friends to try out Starbound because they have not played any games like it so they won't buy it since they have no clue if they'll like it or not. Any idea how to change their minds? Perhaps wait for the trailer or the game itself?

Well, one answer was: Get better friends.

you shouldn't force someone to play, they tend to quickly loath doing something when it's forced against them. as for trying to convince them? why not wait till the trailer comes out and show it to them. insomnia festival is soon and i'm sure some crazy youtuber is gunna post super sweet savory gameplay. worst case scenario? you find to group of people in this forum who are more than willing to play with ya!

I have two friends which didn't want to buy it, first. To make them change their minds (they both preordered it, now) I showed screenshots, I made them listen to the soundtrack, I explained the procedurally generated stuff.

One of my two friends, though, still wasn't convinced after that. But he preordered the game right after I showed him this : "We also got the wonderful Logan Cunningham of Bastion fame on board for the voice acting. The samples he sent today were incredible." (5th June Progress)

Unlike that, my friends did not say that Starbound is a 'crap version of Terraria' and that they will pirate it. Don't mean to judge/offend anyone since I only know them from that one post but that sounds almost like the people on phone reviews always saying iPhone will always be the best and that Samsung sucks. But I'm sure we all of a friend or two like that. My friends that I'm trying to convince aren't like that, they just haven't tried out the game so I thought it might be worthy to make a new thread.

Don't listen to anyone who says "get better friends". If you're willing to ditch people because they dont have the same interest in specific games as you, you need to re-evaluate the way you prioritize life.

That being said, show them some of the Starbound videos (if you haven't already) and don't try to force them into pre-ordering. Wait until the beta actually releases, show them the game, if they don't like it, drop the subject. You'll just end up becoming annoying if you keep trying to force the game onto them. Not everyone is into this genre, and not everyone likes new and different. Let them play the beta (not advice I would give for more conventional betas, but seeing as this will essentially be the full game it wont hurt their first impression) and if they don't like it then move on.

Show them the beta, when it comes out. Maybe even let them play it for a while.

Yeah, I don't find it offensive anyway and I'm sure those people who say that are just joking, it is a forum afterall. :)

Anyways, I haven't been bugging them non-stop to pre-order it besides the first time I asked if anyone wanted to share a 4-pack. I have shown them most of Tiy's videos from his YouTube channel and they don't seem interested, I guess it's because they don't show much gameplay as I said. Anyway, I don't plan on being annoying until I get them to buy the game haha, I just want them to give it a try and if they don't like it then I'll respect that. Guess I'll have to wait for the beta to let them have a go at it.

The music playing is from the soundtrack, so tell them that, too.

If your friends truly do not enjoy this genre of games, then you might just have to accept that.

Yeah, if they really don't enjoy this kind of games then I will, no doubt accept it. But they haven't even tried Terarria or any of the sort so I just want to let them have a shot at it and see what happens. There's no harm trying something new you haven't tried before right (unless it's drugs or something similar but you get the point).

I find intimidation and blackmail to be effective motivators. Or maybe brainwash is more your style. I recommend tying them to a chair with industrial strength leather straps, and forcing them to watch you play Starbound once it comes out. Eventually, they'll be begging you for a chance to play!

Eh, no reason to force others to play. Two of my friends went out and bought Payday 2. I had the original so we all played the beta before it was released.

It just wasn't for me, so I said no thanks and they respected my decision. You should too.

Best thing to do is wait until at least the beta is released and let them try. No other way to do it with games, even trailers are not capable of being honest and showing what a game really is.
