tiy has said that the oceans are in the game and that the ocean floor is awsome my question is how deep exacly are the oceans if im gonna build a undersea utopia i would want it to be extremly deep

to make it more clear how long would it take for your caracter to swim to the bottom 5 minutes,15 minutes ..a hour
how deep will the oceans be exacly and how will the light and creaters change as you go down

that would take WAY TO LONG REALLY.

i'd guess they wouldnt be THAT deep but more like 10 minutes of drowning.

i would hope that i would get to be like 45 minutes or something you know so you can get the feeling of"What horrors could lie just below the surface:) "

Probably not massively deep I should imagine. I'm guessing it will be deep enough to build a sizable base underwater but not too deep that it'll take forever to get to the bottom.

My guess is that it will depend on the planet.

It's actually Cthulhu from Lovecraft's stories... pretty funny.

Good question... I'm going to need quite a bit of ocean to build my Rapture 2.0

this is both incredibly interesting but also insanely creepy for me to read about (i have a morbid fear or deep water)

even if its just a game, diving super deep in starbound would drive me crazy...

As much as I'm really anticipating the existence of water worlds, and hope to build my base deep within one, I think you may be overestimating the size of the worlds/the depth of the oceans. I'd say a ten minute descent would be a generous guess. Probably less than that. We're not talking about planets with a realistic circumference here. It's not going to take you years to walk the loop.

While I expect large planets to be bigger than the largest world Terraria had to offer. I doubt it will be THAT much bigger. Still, you could probably build a base on the ocean floor, and be happily beyond the reach of sunlight. I've also heard that sea life changes as you go deeper. I also know that there are boats, so hopefully there are also submersibles.

I know falling off an hellavator in terraria on the biggest world easily took 30+ seconds i think. And since were talking water here (higher density) i think a dive time of maybe one or two minutes would be a good bet if an ocean planet is really as deep as some modded world did in terraria

This was informative, I didn't know the Trench was quite THAT deep. Though I knew it was pretty deep. Holy shit man, sometimes our planet amazes and frightens me.

I hope there are Ocean Planets that are super, super deep. Why? Just to give those players who want that sorta thing the ability to go there. Maybe the atmosphere is so dense and thick it is a planet of water, with a small core that holds the water in. There are underwater structures and stuff that are submerged completely, it adds a new level of depth to the game. You have to have specialized equipment to dive, and stay down at the deepest points.

New research to figure out how to maintain air levels in your tanks etc. :)

I guess it will depend on the planet. Some planets may only have fairly shallow water, more like swamps, but others may be pretty much ocean planets. On such worlds I imagine the waters might run down to near the core of the planet.

I'm fairly sure I've seen screenshots with scuba gear, so I think oceans are not just slapped on as an afterthought, or used as a barrier to the map, like in Terraria, but really a deliberate frontier to explore.

Also, there's like quadrillions of planets (I'm not even joking), so if one world doesn't have the particular type of ocean you need, I'm pretty sure another world will :)

If I wanted to be free of the morals of parasites build an underwater city, I'd want the oceans to be pretty deep. I'd want it to be a challenge, after all. The sense of accomplishment, for one thing. The it all depends on how the water physics are handled. If the Hellavator takes thirty seconds to cover, then ocean diving would probably take a few minutes. That is, unless there aren't any items that remove water physics (ex. the gravity suit from Metroid). I think those items would be a staple for underwater construction.

Wow. I love me some scale images. I also lol'd at Cthulhu (perhaps not the best idea to laugh at an old god).

OT: I think an hour is extreme overkill for a surface to bottom descent. I would put my guess at 5 minutes being the upper limit for something outside of a dedicated ocean world, and even that it sounds lengthy. I'm a fan of having exceptionally deep seas to play around with if we're given the proper tools to make it not a pain in the ass (see: Terraria, or for that matter Minecraft - oh sponges, we hardly knew ye). A submersible that essentially allows you to move about in amounts to zero G and use all of your normal tools would be grand. I'm a big fan of the underwater base idea and it seems like a lot of people around here are, too. As long as we've got a good amount of depth to work with, especially on those Kamino-like ocean worlds, then I'm golden.

I would hope that some of them go deep enough to freak me out. Like someone said earlier, the idea of really deep water has long haunted my dreams, and the thought of a dark, unknowable abyss beneath me is both exhilarating and intimidating.

I remember when I used to play World of Warcraft way back in the day, and there was this rumour going around Gamefaqs of some massive sea creature that hunted and one-shotted people way out to sea. That, along with the way the ocean floor would suddenly fall off into an endless drop a little way out to sea used to make those late night Kalimdor swimming sessions really give me the chills! In a good way!

So yeah, super deep oceans would be awesome (ly scary) :)
