How deep are the worlds?

A little information of planets in Starbound:
    • Created procedurally based on coordinates. Coordinates will always create the same world, so you can share with friends. Some coordinates will not actually have a planet like in real life. So there should be a lot of empty space between planets.
    • Navigation between worlds will take place via a star map (non-graphical). You will then take a Dropship to the planet, and return to the station later via the same dropship.
    • Worlds that are not infinite in size will loop around, so if you travel far enough you will end up back at your start area, as if the planet is a real sphere.
    • Worlds could possibly become completely destroyable in time, but as of now plans are in place to make it possible to call orbital strikes upon the surface of a planet.

Ah, yeah that's what i meant. Bedrock's in the bottom, but the world itself is infinite. Imagine having to gen the ground as well... that takes some mighty fine machinery to execute.

Yup.. In the first place, i wanted to say that Minecraft's world is infinite, but i misunderstood the topic.

Well infinite worlds aren't exactly that much resource demanding.

For example, Minecraft only saves what has already been rendered/seen by the player, but does not store any info beyond that.
That is why save files get huge once you start going far from the spawn point.

The same thing can be done for Starbound, have huge worlds, but only save what you have already seen.
Later, when you explore more, the rest of the world is rendered and created, however since you are seeing the world as it is being rendered, it will be like minecraft where you think it's the end because there is nothing then out of nowhere terrain just pops up (Which would be very confusing for slow computer users).

*sees terrain pop up* OMG GOD IS LAGGING

Well Tiy was talking about that some planets may be infinite horizontally, or at least ridiculously huge. However he said that infinite depth is basically impossible.
But as for depth, I'm sure each planet will be different.

It would kind of make sense if there was like a solid, impassable core to each planet that you can walk on and walk around, but you are not able to mine your way through it. This way there would never be an issue with different gravitational forces holding the player down. Depending on the environment and size of the planet, the core can be different colors and sizes. Some may be hot and unapproachable, while others may be mild and safe. Perhaps even strange creatures could be found only at this depth.

That can't work because there are going to be infinitely wide planets and when you apply the formula to one of them you get an infinitely deep planet

Actually, it works for nearly all planets. In fact, it could even work for the infinitely wide ones, by making them infinitely deep. You could also have a random deepness for the infinitely wide planets. Of course the 'random' would start at... quite deep.

    Greetings

Robo-Hobo believes the Formula for Depth of the Planet should be as follows..

    Depth = 1/2 Length

    Simple, but hey. It works.

    but half infinity = infinity

infinit leangth planets should have very thing crusts,
with lava under to discourage exploreing.
(thin as in 1/3 way to hell in terraria.)
reg worlds be all teh way thru, cuz at one point, ther'd be a little, 5x5 (possible 3x3 at smallist,)
    that'd be the core.
destroying this could start the collaps of the planet, and would require end game items.
(baceically, you'd be takeing out the keystone, it'd be replaceable if you did it by accident and kept the block, or yopu could replace it with a comp for a mecha core, or ship planet.)
possibly, instead of planet collaps, a huge (or large) chunk of planet would be "draged" into that spot after awhile, to make a new block t replace it with.
so that eventualy, all you'd have, is a little sphere of compact planet.
(if you fully mine it, you'd really shrink the planet)
