And a bit more on the digging down front:

A question has been floating around on the forums lately, will there be an end if you dig downwards? Will it be like in Terraria where you just hit the bottom and that is it? Or will you just dig downwards forever?
Also, what was the main reason you guys choose C++? I generally work in C# (with the XNA framework) and I've been wondering if it should expand onto c++ since they are both C syntax they should be fairly common i would think.

There is a core to the planet that can't be passed. The engine can handle infinite planets in all directions but we decided to cap them off downwards for gameplay reasons.
C++ offers a lot in terms of cross platform compatibility and power. The jump is apparently not too bad.

I dont think minecraft is extremely deep. Minecraft has no more than 10 times your height, while terraria has 1666 times your height in large worlds.

what if you dig a giant hole on both sides of the planet to the molten core would the core just fall out of the planet or would it just float there?

What does it do in RL?....

well IRL the holes would close (collapse) because of the gravitational pull and the planet would ultimately be destroyed and devoid of all life except for micro organisms. and the history would repeat itself perhaps taking a new evolutionary course. then the planet would orbit around sun until the sun eventually (turning in to a red giant) expanded and the temp of earth will be to hot for liquids to exist, killing all life . but since when is starbound real life?

I'm pretty sure it would depend just on the size of the planet... It wouldn't be infinite for lag purposes and you would just keep going down, down, down, and nothing would happen except you getting really bored. A bunch of people seem to be misunderstanding on your question. You're saying how deep is it, but there are people that think you mean how wide the planet is. I'm guessing the deepness blocks would be somewhere around 3k blocks for maybe a small-medium one.

I didnt have time to think
    My last response out :p

I think you would just fall and burn

It would be cool if it worked out the depth using a formula. since the planets are apparently 'circles'.
Eg. if a planet would have a surface (circumference) of 100 blocks, it should take about 16 blocks to get down to the core (radius).

is there a formula to find the planets core size?

I mean the core as in the very centre of the planet.

you mean the very center block? :p

i was thinking you meant a core like on earth :p

Yeah, doubt we can dig all the way through unless we go around the core.

It deffinitly wont be infinite, though!

Even if you could get past the core of a planet you would be unable to continue because you would be stuck near the core. Also imagine digging a downward tunnel near the core and suddenly you start falling up and then down and then up again. Gravity would have to switch when you passed the core which means at one point gravity would be pulling in opposite directions and you would either be stuck or torn apart. really, it's just better to travel the surface instead of looking for a shortcut to the other side.

Not sure it works that way. The Core is the center of gravity, and I imagine that it'll be a large, physical object. So you could potentally dig around it, constantly digging "forwards" until you think you've gone 180 degrees around the core, and then just dig your way up. You wont have gravity pulling in both directions because the core is the center, and as long as you go around it, you wont be torn apart.

I think it would be difficult to implement something like this with a 2D game though.

I agree with you there, but we'll never know until the game is released.

Its gonna be VERY deep, go look at the old pictures with the UI up you could see he was holding 3 stacks of 1000+ blocks

  18. Nwb712

    Nwb712 Void-Bound Voyager

Maybe the stack size is just bigger.

    Marokutai Scruffy Nerf-Herder

Each stack was over 1000 so either way theres alot more blocks.
