How come starbound is so popular already?

If we trace the inspiration for Starbound back far enough, you get monkeys sharpening rocks, I'm pretty sure. Nothing exists in a vacuum, kids.

So, mining and a similar graphics style makes it a clone? Does that mean Cubeworld is a Minecraft clone? Cubeworld has caves and you can break ore. You can craft stuff too. They are also both voxel games.

No, Cubeworld is not a Minecraft clone in any way, and I don't believe Starbound to be a terraria clone either.

Those monkeys totally ripped off the Monolith.

perhaps lot of people mistake starbound like a terraria's space expansion.

I never used the word clone - I said "close". But yes they are practically clones in regard to most of the basic gameplay features, right down the the artstyle, digging and building mechanics to combat.

You can scream and whine all you want, but anyone who has played Terraria can dive straight into Starbound and for obvious reasons.

As a space hobo I idk if I should take offense to this.. (but I won't :D)

Personally though, Starbound offer more to me with the sci-fi, space exploration with many times of worlds to explore, different races to choose from, etc.

Now that's not saying Terraria is a bad game or some how inferior to starbound, because its not. Sure at first glance it they may seem like the same game, but it's not the case. They both offer different things for different players.

I think alot of "famous" youtube gamers got it earlier as well. So even if they wanted to play they still had to wait, building more hype with the "omg I want to play this right now."

Oh, in my previous post I was simply stating it wasn't a clone. It of course is similar, just as Cubeworld and Minecraft are similar. I just dislike people calling games like these clones.

Starbound's differences: More fluid building, less fluid combat (combat kind of sucks), more exploration, worse mining and caverns, sci-fi based, and probably a few other things I just haven't mentioned.

It's space so it's obviously Halo.

But really maybe just because its fun. I hadn't heard of it and my friend bought it for me on release date and I've been playing ever since.

I thought it was fun and posted screens of hilarious things I had done with my friends and give more bought it.

Word of mouth is doing wonders for this game. The fact that its fun too is probably helping a bit too lol.

2/10 troll attempt. Try harder next time.

But to answer your trollific question, Starbound had a following before its beta, which is why it is so popular, so fast.

Also; Starbound is as much of a Terraria clone as Terraria is a Minecraft clone. So there's that.

Easiest way I can see to explain why it is so popular so fast....

    • Terraria comes out and eventually becomes a smash hit. People love it, and want more of it.
    • Developers eventually state they will no longer support Terraria. People still want more
    • One of the developers state they are working on a new game. Players see it as a spiritual successor to Terraria, on steriods
    • Massive Terraria following, craving more Terraria style gameplay begins to follow Starbound.
    Sum it up? =)

  17. It is popular also because they have a super community, website, managers, coders, artists, sorry for all those I forget

Cloning is synonymous with competition. When someone implements your awesome idea you either start adding to what you have or you fall off by the wayside. Competition sparks innovation and is what creates awesome games like Terraria in the first place. I happen to like the game, but competition prevents someone from sitting on a single good idea and letting it stagnate.
