How come starbound is so popular already?

Makes me wonder how a Terraria clone gets bigger so fast.

First, one of the people who worked on Terraria is the lead developer.
Second, Terraria's development stalled for a while, but now Red has added a ton of new stuff, so there's a lot of people playing it.
Third, it's a great concept in its own. Exploration/building/fighting in space? Sci-fi Terraria, with proceduraly generated planets AND weapons, also with Dungeons/NPCs. What's not to love?

Now all we need is to make sure they absolutely nail those concepts, and make the game fundamentally strong. It's not easy to get a sense of progression and "fair gameplay" on that just right level. I don't think even Terraria/Minecraft had that for a couple months (even after release). And that's probably the biggest challenge for SB.

I saw it on Yogscast and then noticed two of my friends playing it on Steam. So I decided to play too.

it's had its hype train building long before the recent terraria update. Up till then, it looked like it was going to be the best option available for people who enjoyed terraria but where sad it had halted development.

Even after the update, players that had been exposed to starbound stayed fans. Think of it: Terraria has one goal, and that is caving to victory. Starbound has its own progression system, but alongside it it has the promise of more aesthetics, random town spawn and numerous dungeon types, freaking BARDS with playable music, and a giant universe to take advantage of in multiplayer, with minimal server load.

this is like hearing of an open world tf2 MvM mmo, or WoW having a in-game DOTA arena. fracking hell, I just made myself wishful again..

It's because this game is good.

And btw, it isn't a clone. If you have even played the game it would seem pretty obvious it isn't a clone.

Truly such a positive non combative statement op. I really doubt you are just an attention seeking troll.

Don't automatically assume a new user is a troll just because of him wording his opinion a bit poorly?

Maybe all he needs is a different perspective, a fresh point of view, to agree with you?

When OP jumps in and uses a hot button topic (Terraria clone) in order to generate a load of replies, I'm going to assume he's a troll.

This is not about poor wording, this is just about throwing matches at petrol.

Oh NOES, he used the T-word... and he called the game a CLONE of the T-word... blasphemy.

No need to be touchy about this. People will compare SB to Terraria, now, in the future stages of the beta, at release, and after release. Might as well start getting used to it.

His few (and past) posts don't suggest he's in here just to troll the forums. Give the man the benefit of the doubt. And even if he IS trolling, moderators take care of that, and you help by reporting (if you have proof of it). Not by making pointless snide, sarcastic remarks. Comments like yours are not only off-topic, but they could be considered trolling as well (picking on another user because you "think" he's trolling).

I'm done arguing now. If you chose to believe that he's not trolling, that's up to you. I stand by my original opinion.

I want more 'clones'. Like, tons more. Terraria is awesome. Minecraft is awesome. Dwarf Fortress is godly. Make tons of good, quality games inspired by these games and I will play and love each and every one.

Quality clones are always welcome. Half-assed, droopy-faced, only 10% of the original IQ, can't even do your homework or go to school in your place clones are bad.

Starbound is NOT a Terraria clone.
It's obviously a World of Warcraft clone.

Starbound's a clone of Game of Thrones.

It's a bit of an add-on to Terraria, but a separate game. You can do a lot more in Starbound than in Terraria I believe.

It was popular once they started taking pre-orders already.
The hype and with it the forum just died down a lot during the wait.
