I've been thinking alot about Starbound lately and what i wanted included in the game, then it came to me! why not include factories, you hire an npc to run the machines and decide what he will make, pay him and then over a certain amount of time he will have created tons of the items you asked for! Please leave your thoughts and ideas below! Also leave a picture of how you would like a factory in starbound to look like!!
There most certainly seems like that there will be factories, though I am not sure if I would pay someone with my precious pixels to build something for me. At best I would make my own robot for that (but that is a different matter). These factories will become the source of everything that you build and allow you to build in mass. As mentioned in a couple of other threads if you build certain things beside these factories they could build other things that they couldn't normally by themselves.
Owning a business sounds too MMO. However, building a factory with people working in it (who don't steal your money from you) would be handy. After all, you'd probably need them to craft items for you, or at least you'd need some of the machines to craft your own gear.
I like the idea but either it needs to be late game, or the factories itself wouldn't produce a big amount of resources or whatever. Or it would cost you a lot.
Methinks the factory would operate totally independent of you. Once built, you can buy from it or use it to make things for a cost, but would not inherently 'profit' from it. Likely a similar function could be used for mining colonies- you use pixels to 'fund an excavation' and get ores and such from that, in addition to what you can get doing it yourself. That, or you could just by ores from the same place. Note that the mining colony wouldn't actually break terrain- the 'excavation' would simply yield ore after a time, and some miner NPC's would leave. Maybe.
I'd like to imagine that if there is to be a factory of some sort in game, it might follow suit to how Rogue Galaxy handled the concept. For those who haven't played it, the factory works as thus: You set pieces down such as pipelines, then you set down pieces that process things. Like unassembling for circuitry, and smelters for metal ores. At the end, you get a creation that you can sell. Something along those lines, I'm not sure how it'd play out. I guess that's what the corporations sub-forum is for, factories would be an interesting addition.
I believe they stated that factories/a manufacturing bay will be where most of the major crafting happens in the game, and there will be one on the space station.
How about you supplying the workers and they just mass produce the item you requested? It wouldn't be fully autonomous and you still get things done by the workers so it's not a complete waste of pixels.
Still would rather have robots making things for me instead of NPCs. There will be blue prints the devs have already confirmed that. Now, building your own factory for greater efficiency would be great.
Unless Starbound have a fairly solid economy system, creating items en masse with factories just sound pretty much like gold farming (or pixel farming, if you wish this way). Although I'd love to find civilized planets that you can visit and buy items fromthe factories in it! if possible, buy parts of the machinery and add to your space station, so you can create your own stuff. I heard its planned that advanced crafting can only be done on your station, and (hopefully) creating items may take some time beside the materials required to produce it, so if you happen to have a cool blueprint for an awesome item and all the mats but somehow your station's machinery is not high-tier enought to make it, you could visit a civilized world, pay some fair amount of pixel and they'd produce it for you. Either that or sell you upgrades for your personal factory. Factories should have tier, that would set witch blueprints they can craft and besides that, producing an item on a high tier factory would give you a good chance of crafting a better gear that on a medium tier.
with the concepts of homeworlds and such factories and storage facilities become very viable, perhaps your homeworld will be run in an almost Dune like manner whereas your spacestation will be your main base and means of travel
Hello. I love the Idea of factories, maybe as a feature or maybe as a mod? Or having amod enhance the factory feature? Of course, this is futuristic so labour will of course be robots. However, have a twist to it, they can break/degrade or malfunction so you will need to repair them accordingly. Also, why not just have one factory world? a world just complete full of factories doing their own thing. However, I like it, I likey alot. Hope this idea is recognized.
Thank you! your ideas is very intresting and i like them alot, you made me want the same thing! and i also hope this idea will be recognized
I don't think factories will be quickly assembled into pixel farms, just trying doing that in Terraria with your work bench. You have to collect of the individual materials in order to build things anyways and remember how spending became less and less often because no one could sell equipment high enough to be used anymore. I think there will be some similarities with this game and Terraria in respect to crafting. So, pixel farms aren't an instant win. For the second part of your quote, I believe this is also how the devs intend to make the game as well, once again in a similar way to Terraria. You will have to upgrade your 'factory' once in a while so you can build even higher tier materials. All in all, this is going to be a fun game.
true they wont become pixel factories. but your example of terraria is kinda void due to mods and warehouse maps.
