Hover mine cart w/ monorail track

The idea would be that you are able to make a magnetic single track and place in similarly to stairs, but in a single line, with no zigzags. When a mine cart is then placed on the track, it will simply sit there, the lights on its side are red. With the push of a button it will activate and follow the track steadily in the direction the rail takes it, deactivating when it reaches the end. You would be able to place materials such as ores in it and it would have a number on a digital panel on the side signifying the capacity left for more materials. Alternatively, if the mine cart is empty, you can get in it yourself and activate it to go for a cruise. You may be able to duck down into the cart to gain a bit more protection or to fit through a tight squeeze. When not ducking down (or if it isn't necessary for the actual game) you can swing weapons or shoot in any direction except downward. What do you guys think? Any better ideas or improvements?

  2. Well, I like trains, so why wouldn't I like this idea... :p

so you could walk along the tracks, or drop through to walk underneath, right...???

Why not, you could get 'carts' going up hills...

And possibly some way to upgrade each 'cart' to increase its capacity/speed.

I have no clue how hostile mobs will behave, but mightn't there be the possibility of them destroying the track...

Presumably you could place many 'carts' on, and either send them all off together, as a 'train'

However, depending on how easy it is to travel to and from your Space Station, this might not be a practical (albeit fun) idea. If you can teleport there and back from anywhere on a planet, at any time, transporting materials would be really easy.
But if you can only get to and from your Space Station from a certain location, or go there from anywhere, but only get back to a certain place, 'carts' like this would be a nice way of getting to your 'mine' and getting stuff back.

You should be able to crush any mob that's in the way with the cart, now that would be interesting.

I don't think you should be able to walk on the track, honestly.

MINE CARTS???? I don't think so, you do know what game you are on right? There's gonna be vehicles in this game, there would be completely no need to be able to travel slightly faster when you don't have enough resources to make a vehicle.

  6. Erm...
If you DON'T have the materials to build a vehicle, and you WANT to go slightly faster, why not...

But the point is for them to carry cargo, not people, so travel speed is kind of irrelevant. Since inventory will have a limited capacity, it's a good way to bring more loot out of a mine (I presume some of us will still end up mining)

    Yes, I know...
But that's kind of like saying "You cant use that -item that exists in real life-, it's already been used in -other game-"
TBH, I'm not too keen on them being "Mine Carts" either, but my use of ' every time I wrote 'cart' wasn't enough of a hint... Perhaps "Levitating High-Capacity Material Transportation Units" instead...

If anyone thinks of an appropriate/amusing reverse-acronym for 'cart'...

I would absolutely love to see mine carts in Starbound.

So basically skyrails with a cart on top?

Basically. Aesthetics is just as important as function in a game like this.
