Hotbars and Difficulty

    I'm curious to see if the way your hotbar is laid out determines how easily players can survive. I would like to consult fellow players over this and see what people use.

    What's in your hotbar? (and the "empty hand" slots in the middle)
    In what order?
    And how difficult to do you find combat/mining?

    1 = Axe
    2 = Bow (relic of the earlier tiers when it was useful)
    3 = Matter Manipulator (for destroying traps, and cutting down vines
    4 = Some kind of dirt or another for making bridges/stairs quickly.
    5 = Drill/pickaxe
    L = Primary weapon
    R = Shield or, if I happen to have found good tiered lightning daggers/shortswords a second one of these
    6 = Secondary Weapon (usually a gun)
    7 = Bandages
    8 = Flashlight
    9 = Grappling Hook
    0 = Torches

    I died once before Sector X. I then died about once or twice per tier there 'cause the damage between tiers seems to get pretty extreme (was getting one shotted on a level 9 planet wearing violium, for instance).

    BitHorizon Ketchup Robot

    Left: Drill, sword, gun, blocks, blocks.
    LR: Dual bullpup sniper plasma flamethrowers.
    Right: All blocks.

  5. ApisRex

    ApisRex Subatomic Cosmonaut

    1 - Drill
    2 - Gun
    3 - Torches (rarely used)
    4 - Axe
    5 - Dirt (instant force fields! yeah!)
    L/R - Broadsword. I like the balance of range of motion, swing speed, damage, and knockback. With an on-tier broadsword I pretty much never feel like I'm in any real danger.
    6 - Stims
    7 - Bandages
    8 - Food
    9 and 0 - filler to make sure drops go in my inventory.

    If the best gun I have is a pistol, it goes in L/R with a shield and the broadsword goes in 2.

    The sense I have right now is that the game is extremely easy, environmental hazards like cold and lack of atmosphere notwithstanding.

    1. Drill
    2. Bandageg
    3. 2h Melee
    4. Ranged weapon
    5. Grapplehook
    L/R Sword and Shield
    6. Easily breakable block (snow/dirt)
    7. Wood Platforms
    8. Food
    9. Flashlight
    0. Torches

    I find that having combat and digging items so close to my asd keys makes combat easier and on the fly healing better instead of having to scroll or stop moving to press 7 or 8. I also keep the snow/dirt blocks out in case i run into a miniboss so i can just bury him or cover myself and take them out but I use platforms for mining and build out of things since I can just jump through them.

    I'll keep some weapons/tools generic (so many character wipes..)

    1. Sword
    2. Bow
    3. Gun (if one at hand)
    4. Grappling Hook
    5. Pickaxe
    L. Matter Manipulator
    R. Empty
    6. Used for building
    7. Used for building
    8. Torches/other light source
    9. Food
    0. Flashlight

    I could never figure how to use the LR slots so I just use them for the matter manipulator

    if you have two 1 hand weapons you can place them in L R Left click to attack with one right click to attack with the other, or two grappling hooks, or a 1Hand and a shield Left to attack Right to block, ^.^ Simple really.

  9. Raybrandt

    Raybrandt Jackpot!

    1: 2H Weapon
    2: 2H Gun
    3: Pickaxe
    4: Torch
    5: Bandage
    L: Matter Manipulator
    R: Red Flashlight
    6: Steel Hunting Bow
    7: Stone Axe
    8: Campfire
    9: Tent
    0: Random placeable block

    When you're using an item look under it on the hotbar. It will show two hands if it's two handed, and one hand if one handed.

    If a weapon is one handed put it in L, with another in R, and then press X to de-equip your hotbar items. This will default to your L/R. Left click will use what's in L, and right click will use what's in R.

    This could really use an in game tutorial, to be honest. It's a big part of the combat complexity and there's nothing explaining how it works to the best of my knowledge (and it took me a couple minutes to figure it out, myself).

    Ah thanks, I gave up and later found out that the things I tried were two-handed items. I never found a shield though :)

  12. Luckmod

    Luckmod Aquatic Astronaut

    It's actually explained in one of your codex that you start with. I actually didn't know how to use the L/R slows until I read that. It was also unequip an item if you press the same hotkey a second time. I usually just press 2, heal then 2 again and go back to my weapons.

  13. Heike

    Heike Starship Captain

    You start with a codex? I learn things everyday.
    Failure found on this post.

  14. Luckmod

    Luckmod Aquatic Astronaut

    Yeah, you start with 4 or 5. 2 or 3 are backstories and i think 2 more are control related. Press L to get to your codex quick or use the sidebar on the right.

    Shields have really weird names most of the time, and the description is really weird.. has nothing to do with it being a shield what so ever. You most likely came across a few and wondered what the hell it was.

  16. Nightryderace

    Nightryderace Subatomic Cosmonaut

    Some of you people have really weird layouts (in my opinion).

    1. 2-handed weapon, preferably with a fast attack speed
    2. Pickaxe/drill
    3. Bow/(Shot)gun
    4. Bandages (Healing food lategame)
    5. Grappling Hook
    Left. 1-handed sword, preferably with slow attack speed and high on-hit damage
    Right. Shield
    6. Torches
    7. Junk blocks to use to cover up/block/access areas
    8. Flashlight that rarely gets used (thinking of changing this to something else)
    9. Unrefined Wood (so I can keep track of how many I have)
    10. Hunger food, such as Bread

  17. Heike

    Heike Starship Captain

    Mmm... hunger food. I personally don't use my flashlight that much either, unless my Lantern Stick doesn't cut it.

    Most of yours are quite similar as mine is just Way different.

    Any ideas what we could replace it with?

  20. Heike

    Heike Starship Captain

    Sadly there isn't really a replacement for the flashlight if thats what your asking.. (unless you want different colored ones)
