Terraria's bosses at the time were fresh and different but when they added hard mode those bosses were uninspiring. With that said a UFO that spawns enemies has been done a million times over. It's not that you can't make a UFO inspiring but the execution seems lacking even for the tier 1 boss.

If say they took the same fight and added a second phase where you fight the leader of the UFO and his crew I would have liked it a lot better. Then the fight could go a little differently. For instance the UFO would start attacking and after it got down to low health, it can land and starts spawning waves for you to fight. After a bunch of wave the leader could come out, and if you beat him you complete the quest. I know that seem like it's been done a million times as well but they could make all the wave it spawns picked from a pool of say 30 uniquely equipped enemies and even make a few different leaders so the fight is unique each time.

I don't hate the boss as is but I feel like they missed an opportunity to make a great tier 1 boss. I just hope the other bosses are more creative or innovative then the one we have seen so far.

Edit: I just read Omni's answers to the thread and according to that for anyone who is curious. There are going to be three tiers in the beta. The boss we saw will most likely not be the tier 1 final boss(doing the happy dance inside) and basically they are on schedule for everything they are planing. I for one am overjoyed to hear all this.

Having started playing games with NES, I disagree with you... they were uninspiring from the beginning, IMO. Sure the UFO has been done before, but every boss possible has been done before.

Every boss relevant to their given genre's have been done. If you go too far out of the box you get screwy esoteric designs that people hate because suddenly you have a boss that doesn't even use any of the game mechanics you've use up until that point, rendering all the time you've spent perfecting your playing moot. Do you want a boss where it suddenly pauses the game, asks you to plug in a DDR dance pad and makes you break out in a pattern repeat battle? Or how about where you have to go outside and mail a box of dirt to the developers and they'll unlock the next tier? It would certainly be an original boss! Original doesn't inherently mean good and unoriginal doesn't necessarily mean bad. Certainly a dev can't just clone an existing game, otherwise we'd just be playing that and not bother with a new clone, but there's also no point in reinventing the wheel every time out if there's no reason to other than to just say you've done it. It's called box-checking, and it's not good.

Oh yeah? A fish, llama, monkey, sea dragon, unicorn, horse, eagle, frog, lizard, and human cross breed that shoots laser beams, poops out toxic rainbow farts, and treats you nicely just to break your heart has been done before?

There are a lot of weird looking bosses that shoot lasers, and have gasses come out of them... Just because your example is made of different colors and a mix of different things doesn't make it unique, better, or more creative than what has already been done -gameplay wise. Either way you avoid the lasers and the gas and try and kill it.

Point proven - that boss doesn't exist. And you forgot to mention him loving you just to break your heart later. I win. Stop thinking like everything has been done before. That is boring. You just don't have a creative mind.

I have been playing games since Atari and I would like you to tell me what games you have been playing? I feel like the first 4 Terraria bosses were what made the game. Sure all of their fight mechanics have been seen before but not in the way they were presented in the game(also the setting plays a major part in to their uniqueness(I mean name another game where you can take the boss anywhere in the game world you want)). Take the first boss, The Eye, first point he can randomly spawn and attack you at the beginning of a night cycle. I am sure this has been done but very rarely. It's a rare mechanic that is very inspiring. Second point you only have one night to beat him. Now timed fights are nothing new but when paired with the random spawning mechanic it can catch unsuspecting player off guard. Third point a second phase. This is usually saved for final bosses but was put in on one of the first bosses and makes the fight a complete 360 in the middle of it. There's more I can say but it's a mute point because Omni already stated that the spaceship is most likely not the first tier boss.

Yea but if you read my first post I give clear examples of how you can take the UFO boss and make him more inspiring. I agree you don't need to reinvent the wheel but they have existing game mechanics that can make boss fights inspiring and unique.

Sorry to say but throwing a bunch of random creatures together is not that creative(Chimera anyone?). Laser beams and toxic rainbow farts are uninspiring attacks. I just don't get the breaks your heart attack, more confusing then anything. IMO bosses only need one unique or rare feature used in a new way to be inspiring.

I strongly agree but only from a philosophical stand point. In the reality that we experience this can not be farther from the truth because there is always something new to invent.
