    Modoken Hey, You!

    Hello!

I love building elaborate homes in games such as these, but I'm finding that it's just not fuel efficient to visit my home planet and between the coming wipe and the amount of time I generally spend on a single planet I'm only setting up rudimentary shacks. Here's my idea for a fix!

TWO teleportation pads on your ship. (or some sort of switch that can change the state of your teleporter)

One leads to the planet surface you are orbiting, the other leads to your home planet.

I don't know if the code is capable of holding two whole planets in a loaded state, but I would love this if possible.

    Thoughts?

Going to move this over to the suggestions forum. I'm a silly poster. Sorry for the clutter!

Something like that would be nice I guess.

The thought of setting up a Home Planet scares me off 'til now. If I am just a bit away, I need around 200 fuel to return. Makes 100 coal ore. That may work the first couple of times, but it's just a matter of it until I'm completely devoid of coal. And grinding coal sounds... yuk.
Another fact to be considered: if you set up a farm at on your homeplanet (which only sounds natural to me) is just stupid. Nothing grows while you are not around. So... afk-idling for 5 minuntes to wait for my crops to grow?

It should be possible. But it would be a huge stress on the hardware I guess. Nevertheless, the Idea sounds neat.

You know you can use wood as fuel, right? It's pretty easy to stock up on in my experience. I don't find having a home planet to really be a hindrance at all.

Yep, I know but thanks. In wood it would be double the "cost" so 200 unrefined wood. And as we at the moment can't replant trees... I think in the long run it would be a hilarious amount of "fuel items" you would have to grind. And then there's still the point, that nothing on your home planet grows as you aren't there. Personally I don't wanna setup a farm on every planet I land on. A base of Operations sould be easy and quick to reach. Try it. I did ^^ You'll be upset in no time =)

I don't have any kind of fix suggestion but I recognize that there is an issue here.
I've set up everything I need on my ship because it's extremely inefficient and cumbersome to set up on a planet.

Well, actually you can visit a huge forest or jungle planet and chop down all the trees. This doesn't take too much time and then you will have enough wood for a long time, since you can stack to 1000 it's not a problem to store it. Since I did that I have no troubles about fuel anymore. Just forget the idea to use coal, even it's more efficient, it's way harder to farm.

Yeah, as soon as i found out food didn't grow on planets while you are away, i removed everything from my starter world and put it in my ship.

Garden ships seems like the best way to go for now.

I think it's a cool idea. I think there should be some sort of "between worlds" teleportation device. It should require enough materials to build to not be trivial, but should allow you to choose from any worlds you have another teleportation device installed upon to instantly travel there.

The fact, that we set the most important things up on our Ship is in fact the issue. I think that was neither intended, nor wanted. But as the progress encourages planet-hopping... it's only natural. And I think that's the point of the OP. It's fuel inefficient to set up a planetary base. Which is counterprdouctive in my opinion. Why to build up something nice if it is a hassle to go there?

A homebase should be easily accessible. Chopping down a huge Jungle for that sake is not what I call "easily accessible". I know that was not quite what you meant.... but always to have to manually return to my home planet at the cost of fuel (and the stack of 1000 wood WILL deplete ^^)... I don't know. I just doesn't feel right. And still (why everbydoy ignores that?) nothing will GROW there! That was my first intention for having a home planet anyways: a crop farm!

Maybe there could be something like a "warp gate beacon" that would let your ship jump between planets for a fraction of the fuel cost and faster travel time. You'd have two of them, one for your home planet and the other for whatever other planet you want. That way you'd pay the full fuel cost the first time you go to a planet, or to move the gate, but just going back and forth between the two would be faster and easy. To make sure you don't lose it it could draw a line between them on the star map. That could also avoid the problem that some people have had of forgetting their home planet by accidentally hitting the set home button.

Actually it's off topic, but I totally agree that plants should grow while being away. I hope that will be fixed. With the large choice of seeds that can be find in the game one could make a really nice farm and visit it occasionally to harvest all the things.

.... gotta apologize for that. Got a bit carried away. But you're right. Was off-topic.

I don't actually do a tremendous amount of farming, admittedly. But considering my exploring brings me to plenty of systems that have a forest or jungle planet, making a pit stop for fuel has yet to upset me. I'm up to tier 3 so far and haven't found it a hassle at all to head back to my base camp on my first planet from time to time for the things I leave there.

originally starbound was going to have a space station act as a home base for exploration and then dev's abandoned that idea in favor of spaceships (probably for the same reason we don't like home planets). but if we had a space station that was cheaper to fly to, that would be really nice. also, larger/expandable ships.

That my be the difference. I was in my homebase often. Found a temple, raided it... store stuff at home. Found a Laborytory Complex, grind it down. Store stuff at home... Anvil? At home... and so on and so forth. And it just ATE my fuel ;) So pitstops by the time became... yea, upsetting. Different playstiles, different demands I guess. An I by no means wanted to say the Idea is a "must absolutely have or game is shit". Just a liiittle QoL improvement. At least, it would be for me ^^

This is a good point. While not everyone wants to work with a home planet, many people do. Having a spaceship to return to base alleviates the common issue in games like these where it takes a lot of time to hike back home, but when it costs so much to do so, it gets discouraging. I'm not sure what the best solution is. interplanetary teleporters could be cool, but raises potential issues with leaving your ship behind, and is harder to explain- or more accurately, if they exist, why aren't they in widespread use? some kind of warp beacon which lowers fuel costs for planets with it on them could work well. start with one to plant on wherever you want, gain access to making more later.

Maybe we should be able to craft beacons to place on our planets. These beacons should reduce the fuel cost to those planets (also easy for bookmarking planets).

Maybe a possibility. But if, then under diminishing returns. Else I'll plant such a beacon on every planet and become SPACE EMPEROR! Mwahaha.. oh, wrong game.

Seriously. I think, reduced cost for returning home should be sufficient enough. That would also encourage a bunch of other stuff such as terraforming. Who gives a damn what the giant pile of dirt looks like? Except it's home of course...
