The thing is, most of the Taliban insurgents are pretty young and impressionable like most footsoldiers of radical ideologies, and most of them are in it for the money because they pay well. So while yes, they are complete scumbags, they are scumbags trying to be... something. And even the worst human on earth is still human.

Yeah, that video was cringey af. The correct way in that situation - which seems to be in the middle of nowhere - would be to plant a small 20g charge and detonate it from a safe distance. Trees grow back, limbs don't.

I'm not saying they're not human or something, i would have probably been no different if i was born and grew up there, but that doesn't mean what they are doing is right.
The solution is obviously education, but for those who are too far gone, what can you do?

Looking at the structure of this mine, it SHOULD already be mostly safe to handle after the first step he did (the two pins he removed and the bit he scooped out with his knife). That little pack is the booster charge which sets off the TNT. The fuse left inside should usually not be enough for that. But then TNT is rather unstable and sensitive.

 

The thing is, if this mine uses TNT it gets more dangerous over time because TNT "sweats" out more potent explosives (basically nitroglycerine) over the years, so even handling it is asking for trouble. It doesn't always happen, in fact, it's kinda rare. But remote detonation is always preferable to handling it with a 6€ multitool. How do I know it's a cheap multitool? I used to have the same until I lost it.

This seems to be a cold war design, most likely soviet origin, made in quantity over quality. If one out of a thousand has a faulty primer, who cares? They produced those in the millions. Mines are not to be underestimated.
