That's a punt gun, one shot was meant to kill entire flocks of birds. They were usually mounted on boats.

 

But it's true in history, some heavy guns were supported by your teammate.

I just say this because the pseudo-military acting was really fun.

After the chemical reaction, they just shoot pressure from what I understood - which of course blasts air too - the point is the same as fireworks, for entertainment or silly, dangerous experiments

Surely, you watched pretty rockets at new years eve explode in the night-sky, with colorful patterns?
They also work by suppressing pressure until it blasts and blows the burning, colorful bits everywhere. ...well and air too

Frankly, I envy Hel to meet them... people who do such shenanigans tend to be really interesting.
