...because from where I sit, they are creepy as HE-double hockey sticks.

Seriously. Every time I come across them, they're in a lab vivisecting each other to create weird zombie apex and other
weird apex with a glass around their brains as they sit in a wheelchair. A freaking race that vivisects each other? Really??

Ugh. I recently saw a thread saying 'For all you Apex fanatics....' and I was like, "WHA??" How could anything so fricken
    creepy garner fanaticism?

Help me. I'm really trying to understand!!

Part of why so many people go Apex is because their racial armor (which is unlocked by default for Apex, future versions will allow BPs sold by merchants to use on other races) will allow them to run faster and jump higher, something that goes a long way to being useful in melee and even ranged, dodging attacks, etc. Then there's their starting recipes which utilize the starting ingredients to great extent. Aside from maybe Humans, other races need to subsist off of plain bread or get lucky on finding crops in the overworld that match their race's starting recipes.

I try not to understand that even though I do....><

Can't really say much to help, as I myself am not too fond of them. Ever seen a village? That may not be as bad, but still a hint of he whom shall be named is watching kind of creepy.
I just accept them as who they are from what I find and know. I just know that I will not have any desire to play them anytime soon. After all each has their preference. :D

I really like their scientific facilities.

The whole concept of them "vivisecting" eachother I would have to guess it's them trying to work on the cure for the Ape flu.

I've only seen that last bit in a USCM facility... Those signs are the best. :D

Read some of the codex entries, it's not that simple.

O_O maybe I should but I have to ask. Will it be anything like old school resident evil?

They're no worse than real-life humans and you seem content with them, hehe.

Anyways, personally I play as one, and main reason I do so is because, well, I really like contrast of their 20 century level civilian technology and hi-tech government scientific facilities, the dystopian aesthetics and, well, the snarky views of your character on some asspects.

Anyways, thing is, you are not playing as one of those who dissect his own kind, you are playing as a rebel with a noble cause of stopping the oppression. Not only have you, and many others like you, resisted the omniscient propaganda, you actually found willpower to oppose to bloodthirsty power as Miniknog. So, really, you're pretty much the same as Gordon Freeman from Half Life 2, just not mute, hairy and from a world more influenced by 1984 that whatnot.

Well, you've just described the Miniknog government, which is the Apex bad guys. Apex PCs start off with a Codex explaining they're part of the resistance.

So, you know, that's actually part of it there, I'd imagine.

Edit: Also when you examine the fuel thing on your ship as an Apex, "Converts fuel into freedom. "

Yeah, that, plus when you think about it glitch and avians are rather oppressive and primitive too.

Well bear in mind that this post is coming from someone who absolutely loves playing Starbound as a carnivorous plant (stab stab stabba!) so who am I to judge? ;)
It was just the whole operating on themselves and resulting awful bi products of said experiments...blech.

I get what Zuvaii was saying that it's the racial stats that make it attractive but I'm of the same mind as Tamorr that while I can understand why some may want to play them, I can't get beyond the back story in order to enjoy them. All the same, I really do appreciate that Chucklefish made them the way they did.

That''s the system the player character Apex are rebelling against. Player Apex are part of a resistance.
If you hate it and find it creepy, you should love playing an Apex. They hate that shit too.

Plus, look at that majestic bastard in my avatar pic. How can you not love an ape-face like that?

    Haha. Awesome.

The good-looking reverend might have helped me see the light! I hate to admit it but I never entertained the idea that an Apex character would be rebelling against what I've come upon in my current Starbound experience. I guess I just assumed that was how all Apex were. How racist and small minded of me!

Thanks to everyone who answered this thread. It helped me open my eyes to the Apex experience and I now have a new, more enlightened understanding of the Apex race.

Well if you think about it all the races Re severely flawed, and only the floran are 100%at unity with their species, every other character (except maybe hylotl) is in some sort of outcast position. And as an avian I can't stand the avian government. Down with kluex! ANSI imagine that's the apex principal too, they hate theminiknog like I hate kluex.

I play a Floran, Human and Apex. I didn't think that I would enjoy the Apex at all but I love them now. When I created my character I decided to strip out of my loins and prance through the jungle.

It felt pretty good. Such a chill primate. Not to mention they have some of the better armor sets in the game.

of note, i recently found a bunch of apex living in glitch houses in a bone biome. they were all armed as spoke of "doing this because we must".

You gotta understand- this is a fictional universe.

For example, I happen to like undead in most fantasy settings. They're fascinating to me, and there's so much potential with them, as anything that's living can be made dead. In the Disciples series, I often play as the Undead Hordes. Yes, they're creepy as hell, because it's a bunch of shambling dead things out to make more dead things, but they still fascinate me nontheless, despite most undead in most fictional settings are pure evil.

Some things in fictional universes are just... well, fascinating, and I think the Apex's apparent lack of concern for life in general to further scientific progress or whatever the hell they're doing can make them an interesting species overall.

Plus it just comes down to personal tastes. Some people like the "mad scientist" archetype.

  20. They're the superior master race, what more is there to appreciate?

    APPRECIATE MY BRAIN!
