Modding Help Help make it a reality?

I would really like to mod some portraits and or sprites but I don't know much about it. I'm good with art and drawing but I don't know how to get at the art or change it can some one help me? if I do all the art can some one make it into a mod? or can someone tell me how to open the original art to edit it?

i try it before (customer npc[sprites,portraits] ), it's successfull, but game will crush when save/load
