I've been playing a couple of weeks, so basically have seen only one version. After my son bought the game and we both liked it, I got it too so we can play together. My first toon, which I still play the most, is an avian named Talon. He prefers pistol and sword, switching to sword and shield if engaged in melee. After getting all the ship upgrades today, I decided to build him a dirtside palace. He already had two farms (representing 4 biomes) that are shared with other toons, but this one is all his own. What kind of structure would be most comfortable to a bird? I chose a form factor reminiscent of where all birds start, an egg: (Let's hope the thumbnail is visible and you have the option to view the larger image.) Now that I look at the screen shot instead of in-game, I realize one of the torches is out of place The lower entrance is a short jump from the ground. The doors at the top are used for hunting...um, birds. :-/ Because the game is beta but I paid for it, I'll finish with a few thoughts for the devs. What I like most about StarBound is the open-ended game play. On one of my farms which is on a forest world, for example, I built an ocean mini-biome including fish, because I could. The new feature I would like to see next is the ability to sell unwanted gear to merchants, which I understand is in active development. What I would most like to change about the game, as it now exists, is revealed by my choice of mods. Two are convenience mods (ModifyBeamAxe to dig faster, and StarMount to travel faster), but I won't play without the Better Lantern Stick. My toon has space travel and transporter tech, yet starts with a flashlight and the vanilla lantern stick has a tiny light radius. Why would a spacefaring race not have night/thermal vision devices or, since the mobs can apparently see in the dark so there's no point hiding from them, lights built into our armor? What I would most like to see added in the final version, after the rest of the game is perfected, is higher resolution graphics. With modern hardware, even sprites can look great. But, it is important to perfect the gameplay first. Cheers!
Welcome! That house of yours looks great, I'm sure the avian will like it! And I think those ideas/wishes for later versions are great; you should post them in the suggestions part on the forum. Hope to see more of you soon!
You're in luck, better versions of the lanternstick have just now been worked on: http://playstarbound.com/
Welcome and hello to the forums! Wait, that doesn't sound right. Anywhooos, if you check the blog thingy you'll see that they are working on the whole selling stuff to merchants thing. Hopefully it'll come out soon. I'm gonna rob these merchants of their pixels.
welcome to the forums gentleman. also nice house. i always knew we needed something like night-vision goggles or something. here is some of my finest coffee
Thanks all for the warm welcome, but not so warm as to require a heat nanosuit. Yes, I forget which MMO got me using the term toon but it was around 2005. In high school and college, RPGs were on paper and our in-game representatives were characters. The term remained in the single-player RPGs of the 1990s, but at some point in MMO-land they became cartoons (toons). I don't want to cause confusion and I know this is an international audience, so I can write character just as well. I have noted the advice on where to post suggestions. It seems that several of my suggestions are already in the works anyway...but I'll comment in the appropriate place on that.
