Has anyone actually been negatively affected by the "unstable" updates?

I'm just curious. I fell like there are definitely people who get lots of crashes in "unstable" updates, but I'm curious as to if anyones ever lost their world, ship or character data because of an unstable update. I'm mainly asking because I want to know what I can expect or not expect if I was to download the latest "unstable" update.

Also, how do I get the unstable updates?

    Thank-you

Unstable updates are really meant for players who don't use mods.

Because Mods can either disable new features through abusive overwrite.
Or can crash the game because of a core change in code.

Also there is always a chance they push an unstable update with a bug.
So if you are a person who loves their character - you should avoid unstable updates like the plague

I dunno, I downloadeded the latest unstable update and am having no problems so far. As for how to get the unstable updates: right click starbound in steam library -> properties -> betas -> select "unstable - more beta than beta" option.

The radiation from the unstable patch made me grow another head. We decided on a name together; we settled with Frederick.

That radiation, coupled with Kawaiifish turned me into a cat girl... send help, or milk...

Most other replies basically say that its nothing to worry about... How exactly could my character be ruined because of a bug? Are you saying that is likely going to happen or are you just putting it out there as a small chance to happen, but possible consequence?

That is the General Warning given by Developers when Unstable branch started.
Because there was an issue a few months back - with a few individuals who nearly caused biblical flood - because they cried so much that their characters got deleted.

Hence to prevent people who may cause the future destruction of the Earth [, before the giant tentacle monster comes.] The warning was given.

You can't say for sure, if it can cause corruption or not. They try to make sure before they push it out. But bugs slip in unnoticed.

Much like being hit by lightening, it's only an abstract and improbable concept until that shit actually happens to you. That's when you want to tell the entire world " 'Ware the skies!" and hide from grayish clouds.

Can it happen? Sure and it's devastating. Does it happen enough to rig up surge protector underwear? Not really.

    Lighting may not be Common.
    But radiation sure is.

I love the visuals the posts in this thread has caused. Taking most of the posts before this one as literal, it's actually quite interesting.

On the topic of the [unstable] vs stable, I would also like to point out how amazing the English language is. While "unstable" is fairly self-explanatory, the word "stable" and it's synonyms are still less reassuring than "safe". Which means the devs have doubly covered their asses when said "biblical deluge of tears" comes regarding a wipe of some sort.

There you go, that's what I was getting at. If you're afraid of the consequences, don't swim outside a nuke plant or hold a nine iron in the air during a thunderstorm. If you do, you still might be OK, but always back up your testicles, err . . . files.

    The analogy has gone rogue.

In seriousness; unstable is meant to crash and burn and fail. It's exactly as the name implies: Unstable. The reason is that it's a filter to allow testing to be done in a controlled update, and allow people a compromise between enjoying the current update now without any ill affects, or try out new content that they're pumping out sooner through this venue that they can get feedback on to make sure that it's properly released.

To all I have to do is copy the Starbound folder to a different location, right?

Copying the whole "Player" file works for me, but I'm a spacer. Ground pounders say you have to copy/save a universe file but you should never trust a dirt licker.
