Exactly. I believe I made a post detailing why I didn't believe in the weariness mechanic on that thread. I simply believe that while it may be somewhat realistic, there's no actual need for a mechanic that hinders your movement or reduces your health simply because you're on a planet. It fulfills no purpose. I could see the reason if it was for difficulty, but that'd fit under something called ''fake difficulty'', meaning you just add random stat penalties, just to make it harder. Which is not especially fun. It should be harder because of improved enemy AI or environmental hazards, as that's fun to adapt to. Just tucking on a few stat penalties isn't fun for anyone. Now, a mechanic that'd reduce your speed by, say, wearing too heavy armour, that's interesting, as it forces you to either rely on speed or the strength of your armour. It gives you a choice in gameplay depending on what kind of ''class'' you want to play. And most importantly, it doesn't limit exploration like weariness would.
You hit the nail right on the head my man. Arbitrary difficulty leads to needless tedium, especially on a repeat playthrough. Also, w00t, my first 2-page topic! I'm glad the hand-to-hand concept is getting lots of attention! Hope they decide to implement some of these ideas!
I like the idea of using your fists, if only for the hilarity that can ensue from it, a brave explorer delving into the furthest reaches of space to discover new forms of life, and then promptly punch them in the face, if they have one.
Haha yeah that is pretty pretty awesome. An earlier poster (sorry, forget your name) put it best with 'the ability to Kirk things to death.'
