    Hey fellas
I used Hamachi to start servers back in my Terraria days
Will Log Me in Hamachi work for starbound as well?

Hamachi works as it's own server, so the way it is set up I'm pretty sure it'll work for any game regardless of whether it wants to work with Hamachi or not.

I doubt there will be any problems using Hamachi. The only game I've ever run into problems with Hamachi in was Titan Quest which was fairly easy to fix with some Hamachi configuration. It may not even be necessary depending on how the networking in the game is set up.

Won't Starbound have its own server built into the client?

Well saying that "Hamachi works as it's own server" is not a correct statement. Hamachi is VPN software and as long as Starbound doesn't have any strange restrictions on networking (which it shouldn't,) the two will work together.

Hosting a Game server over the internet requires you to "port forward".
What this does is when you do it your router projects this port and allow other players to connect to your computer through that port.
For example, Terraria used Port 7777, so by port forwarding to port 7777, other players around the world can connect to your server.

Here's the issue: Port Forwarding is a B*TCH to do.
It took me a week to do it right. You can follow the instructions TO THE LETTER and STILL get it wrong.

Go here, ti tells you about it: http://portforward.com/

With hamachi you don't have to do this.

That really depends on your network Sgt.Sprocket. I live in a house with 5 other people, because of this we have two routers, and when we have company over (Generally a total of 10+ people.) We have two routers, and two spliters for the number of desktops hooked up to our networkd, this isn't taking into account the number of laptops we have on the side. Most of us design games, create music, write books etc, eithier as a hobby or eventually the dream of a job doing such. So we have, and need alot of computers networked. Hamachi doesn't play nice when it has to push through Routers as well as a normal PC, this is why some people who join Hamachi can join it, but cannot be pinged, and if they cannot be pinged, they cannot successfully host a game.

Hamachi does not work as it's own server, Hamachi's original purpose, was a virtual or artificial LAN, for games that didn't support online play. (Which there used to be quite a few, this has lessened a great deal since though.) Because of this, so long as you aren't router screwed, and are running on a straight cable modem etc, Hamachi is a much easier and more pleasent alternative, to port-forwarding, to answer the OP's question, Hamachi should work just fine with Starbound, IF Starbound has LAN capabilities, if it doesn't support that, Hamchi is (At least for this house) more of a struggle then just port-forwarding a computer. But, our experiences with Hamachi are quite different because of the router hop-skotch we have to play.

    Again. Port forwarding.

Built-in server capabilities or not, it's not port forwarding for you.

Well, if it doesn't have it build right in to Starbound, there is always that Evolve program, I just used it today to host a Terraria server for me and some friends to get some nostalgia.

I'm so hyped for Starbound that my interest in Terraria has raised back up a bit.

Games don't use Hamachi, people use Hamachi to play games. It's not even necessary for 99% of games, but some people prefer it over port forwarding or simply don't know or don't want to know how to set up port forwarding. It took me less than a minute to set up port forwarding for Terraria and everything was smooth sailling from there. Now you do have a point about using Steamworks, the autoconfiguration makes multiplayer really easily. The problem with this is that Chucklefish is planning on releasing a DRM-free version of the game as well which will limit the number of Steamworks features they can utilize in order for both versions of the game to be compatible. We'll have to wait and see though.

Port forwarding is pretty easy, but isn't there a limit to how many people can join a Hamachi room?

I'm not saying that "Hamachi works as it's own server", I'm simply referring to the fact that Starbound can host the server directly from the client.

Hamachi will work for Starbound as it did for Terraria. But if I am correct, setting up a server will be alot easier, and so people that have never even used Hamachi can set up servers for them and their friends. :)

I believe there is a limit of 8 people per network with the free version.
I was actually referring to some of the statements made before your post. I must've hit the wrong reply button when I posted that. I think I'll go fix it now...

Last time I tried using hamachi, I still had to port forward... else it wouldn't work.
Plus, how hard can it be to port forward? The first time I port forwarded a game I used portforward.com , it barely took me 3 minutes to get the port open...

Too complicated for a lazy guy like me.
