The closest I've seen to that in real life would be someone owning an ape, but there are instances of that concept in a few cartoons, MLP being one of them. Allegedly, nearly every species in that show is sentient, but they all have varying degrees of sapience, with horses being the most developed. It's actually pretty weird the things we come up with as humans...

 

Reminds me of the episode of Family Guy where everyone had a furry dog version of themselves, and Brian was a human. Dog people owned humans as pets.

We're still an incredibly intelligent race. Morals and Ethics are completely subjective. Humans pretty much invented them.
But what isn't subjective is the fact that we've survived for around 200 thousand years, built cities in every area on the planet, discovered the facts about our earth and the species that live here, discovered the atom, invented mathematics, left the planet..

 

but how do we know we are incredibly intelligent without another race of high intelligence to compare ourselves too?
and wouldn't that mean intelligence is a matter of progression rather then a fixed point?
and what if we ram into a nuclear warhead and stop, does that still mean we were intelligent but simply made critical errors? or that we were suddenly unintelligent for not being able to surpass the instincts that trigger war?
there are a lot of factors to take into account, as what to compare ourselves too, wouldn't that mean its a subjective topic in itself based on the point of reference(or lack of)?

 

We are, as far as we've been made aware, the most advanced species on our planet
EDIT: And actually, we're the most advanced species in the universe as far as we've been made aware, so never mind me

 

We are more intelligent than any organism that's ever been discovered. Isn't that a comparison point?

Intelligence is all about being capable of logic and complex thinking, and it makes you capable of development and progression.

Wikipedia describes intelligence as "capacity for logic, abstract thought, understanding, self-awareness, communication, learning, emotional knowledge, memory, planning, creativity and problem solving."

Humans have all of these things. So, by definition and by comparison to every organism in the known universe, humanity is intelligent.

 

There's only one answer to any of that, we don't know, and you can't blame people for that. All anyone can do is to go off of what we do know and what we do know is that we are intelligent, although very few people are still in the mindset that humans are the apex of everything. The fact that the common intelligence level of the human race is actively changing at a rapid pace tells us that we are intelligent. Things that were considered advance back in the 50s is now considered child's play today, and the same will continue to happen as time goes by. I can already see things like trig (I'm just using trig as an example) being taught to younger and younger children in the near future, and that's pretty scary.

 

I honestly feel like I'm dying.

That's a good thing, I know missing class this early in the year sucks, but some times it just has to be done. Hope you feel better soon.
