Honestly, I never pay attention to much but the Homestuck thread. I'll try to be helpful from now on though, to counteract the people being jerks :3

  3. This is way exaggerated and uses stereotypes, so please, don't take anything I say here too seriously.

The wonderful thing is that if you read this thread without knowing the couple of threads that caused the problem it all sounds like:
"You need to calm down guys."
    "Yep"
"We should seriously calm down and change because*wall of text*"
    "Yep.We need to calm down"
    *hilarious pics*

I feel like I'm guilty of being a bit harsh to new people who make repeat threads or reporting people who 1-word post (outside of chat/clan threads)

If anybody feels offended by anything I've done, feel free to PM me about it.

Ya, I've been careful to check the forums not to make a duplicate thread. I always check everywhere, and usually find the answer in 5 min.

Whenever you gatter a lot of people together and let them voice their opinions, those who dont really care wont say anything, those who are happy "might" say something and those who are unhappy ... boy do they ever get vocal... but they usually are not representative of the group mindset. This is aplicable to pretty much all situation where a bunch a people are gattered and amplified by anonymity. And then you have the internet.
Worked in tourism and what we heard often was, a satisfied customer will tell 4 people, an unsatified customer will tell 40. Bad stuff goes around a lot more.

So in the end, people who dont care wont anwser to newb question, friendly people might and unfriendly people most certainly will try to hammer them down.

man i'm glad i'm not in this boat. i don't really understand how people can be so uptight about duplicate threads.
seriously, i moderate another forum for an upcoming game, and duplicate threads are the least of my worries.
(of course, we don't really have that big of a community but still)

i know this isn't just about duplicates, but people really need to relax on newbies. be happy that you're helping someone that you may eventually play on a good server with and have fun with!

May the messiac entities of the NES bless thy community under the procurement of an 8-bit heaven, and may men of Polygon or Pixel roam free without please, as once said: "All virtual accounts are created equal, under liberty, justice, and System.Console.WriteLine("Hello, World!");"

May the children of 8, 16, 32, or 64 pixel size enjoy the equality of others, as what we should display.

Under our forum, overseen by game.workspace, undividable, with liberty for pixel and polygon for all.

It's not just old members, it's a lot of types of members, blatantly trying to be funny. I think this is a good message and tells us that we really need to respond to the question, not make a joke about it and definitely not repeat the same old 'Another one of these threads?'

Is this in response to that thread that was in the off-topic not long ago? About aggressiveness? If I remember correctly, I somehow managed to get into an argument in that one. Go figure.

The biggest thing to keep in mind here, when it comes to chilling out (I'm somewhat of an expert) is to not take everything so seriously. This goes for everyone. Potential offenders of folk should try to let things go, and potential offendees should not take everything to heart. Simple as that.

"How do we do that Killer Snowman?"
I'm glad you asked, nobody in particular. It's very simple actually... Let it go. Simple as that.*

There's another thread about the RELEASE DATE? OH THE HUMANIT- let it go.
Some guy just passively implied that I am ignorant? OH HE'S GOIN' DO- let it go.
Killer Snowman may or may not be using the "-" symbol correctly? SOMEONE SHOULD- let it go.

Hell, I almost didn't post here because I don't care that much. But I figured I'd share my wisdom.

*This does not apply to serious cyber-bullying or anything truly malicious. That stuff should be reported, and then let go.

Why thank you. Rereading my post I realized I used the word "simple" a little too much. Maybe I should get a thesaurus. Or market for Apple.

Now I should mention, while it is "simple", that doesn't mean it's easy. We as people are kind of trained to hold on to things. Mentally speaking, this includes stuff like facts, your personal info, and where the hell you put those car keys. So, it's just natural for people to hold onto other seemingly small things (what Mrs. Lancaster said about my colouring skills in 1st grade for example).

So, while it's a simple concept, it actually requires a bit of an adjustment. You have to actively think about it. You have to tell yourself that it's okay to not be bothered by whatever it is that's bothering you. Whether it's a repost of a similar topic, or Mrs. Lancaster's thoughts about my "inaccurate" rainbow buffalo I coloured in 1st grade. It's not easy, but it's simple. It's also healthy and stuff.

That implies, however, that people have an issue with these things. Like, in the case of "Killer Snowman may or may not be using the "-" symbol correctly?", the theoretical person in question doesn't actually have a problem with you using it incorrectly.

I mean, who actually has an issue with how a person uses a certain punctuation, especially one as infrequently used as the motherfudging DASH?

No, these are the kinds of people who simply want to show the world they have SOME kind of superiority over someone, even if it's something so SIMPLE AND COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT.

Sure, my grammar and punctuation are typically spot-on, but that doesn't make me superior to the guy who doesn't know how to use dashes. That's seriously the tiniest fudging bit of knowledge that anyone can have over someone else. And it kinda makes me furrow my brow when I see it and I WILL NOT LET THAT GO. HOW DESPERATE CAN ONE PERSON BE!?

I think he was using that as a way to say to not go off on people about punctuation, not the dash specifically.

I would turn this into an argument about how concern for superiority is something to let go of in itself, and that you're focusing too much on a (I'll admit) poor example, and not the concept as a whole... but I already know how this is gonna end. Or rather, how it will never end.

I'm gonna have to let this go.

Well, right. I agree. But his idea is that people get upset when they see these things, and that this tendency to get upset about it is the cause of the problem.

Granted, the dash-thing is a very specific example, but there are other things out there that people cause problems over that don't necessarily have to do with getting upset about something.

Assuming that people only start fights and arguments because they get upset is flawed reasoning. That's the point I was trying to make.

Yes... my point is that sometimes, people are just douchebags.

EDIT: In fact, no. Actually... the MAJORITY of fights on the internet happen because people are just douchebags, not because they're upset about something someone said. Granted, those fights HAPPEN, but not as often.

By trying to narrow down the problem as "Hey, man... don't let things upset you"... it's just such a blindly positive view of people. The truth of the matter is that most people out there start fights for the sake of picking fights they think they can win and then come out looking smarter and better than someone. Let's not beat around the bush, here. THESE people are the reason things like this are happening in our forum. Not because their delicate sensitivities were hurt.
