Is there a way to get a gun to play a short animation for each shot, rather than be based on holding down the mouse (bows)? I'm looking to make a pistol's slide move back with each shot, and I want it to be dependent entirely on actual fire rate.

That's for looping animations, and they do not synchronize with your actual fire-rate. (Your fire rate can change when your energy is low.) It's based on holding the mouse, which is cumbersome and not very useful.
Hopefully chucklefish will implement a feature to allow firing-triggered animations then (The actual event of attacking/shooting a bullet leading to the animation playing.) ... the Left-Mouse tied animation is very limiting.
