Grow up

This is going to sound really bad coming from a newbie, but there's something I need to get off of my chest right now.

Yesterday, I preordered this game, and I was very exited. I've heard nothing but good news about it, and I knew I'd end up buying it the moment it came out anyway. Now, let's get something straight here, I don't do this often. Sometimes, I wait an entire year after a game launches to make sure it has enough replay value, or at least make sure the price is down to what it's actually worth to me. But I've known for a very long time that this game was going to be very good, and I jumped on that bandwagon.

It took one day for all of that enthusiasm to die. Do you want to know why?

It's not how long it's taking for the game to come out. Like I said, I've had to wait a lot longer for some games. It's not any of the features; there are some races that made me go "meh", but I just won't play as them. But it is who I might be stuck playing with when the game comes out.

I've been browsing the fourms for one day, and in that time, I've seen nothing but whining, entitlement, and a general sense that half of you don't even want the game you preordered. Is there an item, race, or mechanic you don't like? Instead of ignoring it, you constantly demand it be removed from the game. Is the starter stuff no good? Instead of waiting to see what the mid or endgame content is like, you immediately declare everything to be garbage.

Now, part of this is my fault. I saw how all of you were whining when they announced pets as the million-dollar stretch goal, yet I joined anyway. I thought, "This must be an isolated incident. Surely, nobody would whine so much about a game they were excited about." Welp, turns out you would. Not only that, it seems to be the only thing you do around here.

Let's make something perfectly clear here; this isn't a AAA title. This is a 15 dollar indie game. Yes, it's amazing, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not going to be everything you hoped for, and it's going to take time to come out. There are going to be technical and practical limitations, and there are going to be things you don't like. It's impossible to please everyone, especially with a fanbase this huge. Any reasonable community would realize this, but of course, you can't be reasonable.

I'm sure that in a few weeks or months, I'll be exited for this game again. I don't regret my pre-order at all. However, I regret trying to reach out to this community. It's very obvious that none of you know the meaning of the words patience or compromise. I was hoping I could find a nice community to play with when the game comes out, but instead, it looks like I'll be begging my IRL friends to play or going it alone. I don't want to adventure with people who only seem interested in what they want and nothing else.

TL;DR You're all a bunch of whiny 15 year olds, and I'm embarrassed to say I know that this game exists.

So... are you embarassed/disappointed/unenthusiastic in the game, or in the game's community, which the game and its developers have no control over?

I'm with you on that, incidentally, but your tl;dr makes two points and only one is supported by your reasoning.

I only notice about 1/3 or less of the posts to be whiny. I just ignore those, and still get a good read from the ACTUAL posts on the forums.
And really, we whine because we care.

 

Don't hate the game, you don't HAVE to play with the whiny, entitled pricks on the forum. And saying you're embarrassed to know about this game is fairly childish and rude as well. If you overreact to the overreacters, you'll spur more overreaction.

 

I'm very upset over how the community is behaving, and that, in turn, is killing my enthusiasm for the game.

 

You just described all of the internet and every forum out there. You're also assuming the people you're talking to on the forums are the only people you'll have to play this game with and the people who use the forums regularly are a small percentage of the entirety of people who will play Starbound, as is true for any game. You shouldn't be letting the childishness of people online (which has been a constant for over a decade now) affect your decision to do anything, especially your excitement for a game. Seems to me that's kind of immature in itself - letting the way other people act toward each other (not even how they act toward you) deter you from enjoying a game. You should develop thicker skin and quit worrying about every tiny little thing people say that you don't agree with.

I see this a lot in my gaming community and it is extremely annoying. Watching everyone take offense to the slightest unpleasant comment and make rage posts about it. People do stupid ****, get over it. The world isn't a doll house. You should also not be making target posts like this. All it's going to do is cause a flame war. The ONLY purpose this serves is to start a flame war.

 

So your answer to a bunch of people complaining and whining on the forums was to... complain and whine on the forums?

You realize that only those type of people are the ones talking the most. The ones patiently waiting and not acting "like a 15 year old" are the ones you don't see talking, because we have better things to do.

Don't judge a community based on the loudest people.

It's true what they say. A few bad apples can spoil the bunch.
But I agree with you that some people, (often newcomers who joined due to preordering) are impatient, rude, and sceptical of every last thing.

I'm hoping it dies down, and it has a little bit. But there are always those who are going to be a pain.

 

No attempt to offend, but you've gotta deal with it. Remember Minecraft? The community used to be good. Today it is like this: "AHAHAHA A KREPER SO FUNY!!!!!!!1111 DDDDDDD"

Similiar applies to ROBLOX and basically any game that gets popular.

 

I'm sorry that you feel this way. And you are a very brave woman for putting that down in writing the way you did. I think that lately we've seen some of the worst of whining on the forums, at least the worst since I joined up 4 months ago, but I don't think this reflects the general community. I hope you stick around so that you get a chance to see it's better side, or to even help encourage that better side to come out. I don't think a post like yours will help much, just try leading by example, and use the report function when you see something offensive, or behaviour which reflects badly on the community.

I would ask anyone who reads through this to think very carefully before responding in this thread. Keep things Civil. You may not like what someone has to say, but don't have a go at them just for saying it.

 

Well i kinda agree with you however you don't know the full story yet, some people in here waited for the released last year (Tiy estimate) but it didn't = dissapointment for the seniors members, i understand that there's not like 20 people working on this project to make the game progress way faster and you putted the stretch goal about pets, people don't understand that if they put more complicated stuff means more coding and way more time to get the BETA released and thats why they putted more SIMPLE stretch goal because they are overwhelmed about the pre-order they didn't expect that huge amount of money.

You can mod stuff, you can change something into the game EASY, well ofc if you know the C++ coding but let's be real putting this thread won't help anything at all your just going to get people getting mad at you or agreeing with you, and the people who whinned is like new people like you, who doesn't know the real stuff going on.

So people get mad, cry, and post this kind of thread... and i am not saying this is a useless thread, i am just saying that, it's look like your whining right now by posting this.

 

Unfortunately, yes, we have some rather childish and stuck up individuals here, but they aren't the majority! They are simply the loudest, as it usually is with groups like theirs. All must know of their discontent, and woe be to ye who does not think their opinion spoken from the mouth of God himself. But not all of them are bad people just because they're boisterous and entitled now. They may very well be fun to play with. You won't know until you get to know them, and you won't get to know them until you're able to play with them.

I'd say we're a decent community, setting aside the rabble rousers. All I can really tell you is try not to join their servers if they bother you too much, and if you run your own server and you see someone behaving poorly, boot them!

dude, this is the internet, its what people do
and what you perceive as whining is actually an excited debate and exchange of opinions by a great community of people who just want to see starbound be the best game that it can be

furthermore, you will not be STUCK playing with anyone
you will, like most people, play with yourself, your friends, and/or the people on any server you choose to join
there is no sticking going on here, if you don't like a group of people that much DON'T PLAY WITH THEM, play with someone else

furthermore, insulting people by calling them 15 year old for whining is rude, and i find it as ironic as it is pointless, to tell people this by being exactly the kind of person you dislike on a forum

 

I'm 20 years old. Just waiting for the game, participating in the threads where I have a suggestion. Not whinig, hating or what else you (OP) said. And then you (OP) come along and generalize everyone in this forum. And there are not much things I hate more than generalisation.
I have been here quite a while and have not just seen entitlement and hate otwards some features. Yes during the starter pet stuff there was plenty and I was annoyed by that. I have not made any hating comments, but I thought about how you could make this system work besides the already planned creature taming and wrote my thoughts. But besides this I havent seen much of the likes. I've seen great suggestion threads and informative posts and such.
And saying after ONE WHOLE DAY (my god, thanks for spening that much time to judge every single person in here) that EVERYONE here is whiny.... wow... just wow. You are the kind of person I am glad not to know and furthermore don't want to know.
I'm happy not to know you, and goodbye (hopefully) forever.

 

I'd like to think that I've been very patient with this entire thing. I pre-ordered within the first hour or so of it becoming availible to do so, and haven't complained or whined about anything. Posted a few times in threads concerning what you could do to pass time or what games you could try out. Watched some movies, listened to some music, and did things around the house that needed to be done. So, I believe I've been quite patient, and I'm sure there are others out there that are as well.

 

I think that OP made some good points, but she worded them in the worst possible way.
