Great Engine. Skeptical about Flavor

Discussion in 'Starbound Discussion' started by ohgoditburns, Dec 18, 2013.

  1. You're not serious, right?

Terraria= Fantasy setting, magic, combat centric gameplay, single map, strictly localized biomes with strict pay-outs for each one...

Starbound= Space/Scifi setting, Technology, exploration and discovery centric gameplay, infinite worlds, varied and random biomes with random everything.

The only way it's like Terraria is that it's a side-scrolling game with resource collection/management.

sci-fi setting: it's just a coat of paint, nothing else, you don't really notice a difference, you still play the exact same way.

Technology: where? you mean the crafting stations (that fill the exact same purpose as in terraria)? I've seen or heard nothing about us being able to research different paths of tech or anything similar to that. Or are you thinking about the new recepies that are unlocked when you defeat bosses?

Exploration centric: really? The only really intressting things there's to find out there are cosmetics. Everything usefull is built/crafted by you, and you don't really need to leave the first planet you get to in any sector. And every planet got 1-2 intressting things to find.
Terraria is alot more exploration centric in the way that you'd have to explore different places to get usefull and different items.

Infinite worlds: you can get this with Terraria as well, just create more worlds for one charachter and jump between them.

Biomes: varied? are you sure? they seem pretty much like the exact same, with different colors. enemies are the basicly the same everywhere, loot is also the same (bar a few cosmetic items). I'd say that the biomes in Terraria were alot more varied and specified.

Keep in mind however, that I'm only talking from the perspective of how the game is now, and I really hope that it becomes alot more varied and advanced than it currently is.

On many planets in different systems, with different races, the technology would be different. Even in a space game there might be places with old technology. I like the axes. The matter manipulator is good reaching and for everything but slow. I like that I use what I can find on a planet.

He probably decided to bet it all against Scarlet in that match she almost lost against Bomber. When those burrowed Banelings connected, it was like watching his whole life explode in a slurry of acid and dismembered Marine limbs. Tragic, really. Go Scarlet, yay!

I've actually had three different professors across multiple disciplines allow Wikipedia as a direct source (or use it themselves, to my surprise), and a lot more than that have suggested going to Wikipedia and using the sources from that page, even if they didn't allow Wikipedia itself. In time, the site has become more accurate than many legitimate encyclopedias, and more and more of the academic community is coming to realize that. Sure, it still leaves much to be desired, but it's getting there.

TvTropes is the only website that explains Moh's Scale of Science Fiction Hardness at all. The concept doesn't even really exist outside of the Sci-Fi/Tropes community or those who have looked into it. It isn't like the Theory of Gravity or the definition of a Tragic Comedy-- there is no academic basis for the definition because the community itself made the definition. However, saying that their own definition for the term they made up themselves isn't reliable is pretty ridiculous. I mean, the entire discipline of Philosophy would probably dissolve if they couldn't make up their own words and decide what they mean-- that's just how they explain abstract concepts more easily.

Whether you like it or not, some Sci-Fi fits the description of what TvTropes calls "Hard Sci-Fi", to varying degrees (it's a spectrum). You don't need to accept their terminology or claim that they have academic authority to realize that. It's an abstract concept that they are trying to explain-- that simple. The OP only made reference to it to explain himself, not as the "basis for an argument".

Btw, I added that as a later edit, because someone misinterpreted me saying "hard" as in game difficulty.

I'll get heavily bashed for this, but oh well. If Starbound is Terraria 2, it's a poor sequel to the original. I like the game, but as it is right now, it doesn't come close to surpassing its predecessor. I hope it gets better in time, but I'll be waiting to play it until then.

The only way to make tools is through an advanced factory.
Since the Character doesn't have access to one. - It is just an obvious choice he is forced to make his own tools which he is capable of making.

As he further progresses - he finds new technology to help him out to craft more advanced things.
Its quite basic, I don't see what is so difficult to understand about that.

Also it is not a "Gold Pickaxe"
Its an alloy pickaxe called gold pickaxe. Because its a mix of Copper \ Silver \ Gold.
This is a REAL alloy known as
    1. Electrum - Used in Ancient Greece called "White Gold". Known for hardness and Durability
    2. Hepatizon - Historically noted - but not well known.

Andrew Spinks announced some time ago that he is developing Terraria 2. I think some competition would be good for this game. So far, it really feels like SB is everyone's g/f and it is difficult to give honest feedback without people lashing out defensively. I think the game sucks right now in its current state, and it is boring as all hell. So, I don't play it. I made my suggestions which got drowned out in debates about semantics. Since all I can seem to muster out of the community is simple responses devoid of any useful feedback, saying "it's just beta, it will be completely different in the end", which I mostly agree with and absolutely hope for, I've stopped making suggestions. It all seems so futile. The best I can do with the amount of time I choose to invest on the forums is support the ideas I like, and cross my fingers for the mod of my dreams sometime down the road.

Sorry i didn't read all the replies to your comment/question but i had to add that from digging around in the game files i am pretty sure that everything your listed is in the game or in development to be in the game. They have shields under development , they have plasma rifles, they have drills, they have Mechs, they are looking to add starship battles and jump gates. What is more Sci-Fi then that? Stick around, you will be pleased i am sure.

It makes sense for tools to be tipped with diamond, but it makes zero sense for them to be made out of diamond.

You can't take tiny pieces of diamond and create a larger object out of them, for one (As far as I know). Smelting / forging only works for metals.

Secondly, it doesn't have the properties that a tool needs to have. Diamond is brittle like glass. If you took one swing at a hard rock with a diamond pick, the pick would probably shatter. Diamond picks make about as much sense as gold and silver picks.

We tip cutting tools with diamonds because diamonds are really hard, so they're good at scratching stuff. I don't see the value in tipping a pick with diamond, but a drill, sure.

I actually think the diamond in game isn't actually diamond, what with it being smelted from ore.

Diamond ore is a thing, but smelting it is not! Haha.

I want to see more modern materials like carbon fibre, carbon nanotubes, and aggregated diamond nanorods.
