Grappling, weak spots, and executions.

I would love to see certain medium to large size creatures capable of nearly incapacitating a Starbounder with the use of it's large size, unique appendages, or through the use of poison and the like. While I'd like to see these maneuvers escapable by the solo player, I'd like a friend to come in handy here. By offering much faster escape speeds, reduction or complete avoidance of damage, or many other neat mechanics combat could have a far larger depth to it.

For instance, say you're fighting a large biped with massive shoulder and arm muscles, hands as big as your body. It could grab and pin down one player, causing continuous damage and debilitating them. The player in question could attack the hand at a penalty to get free, or perhaps mash movement keys to squirm out. Other players could make the experience much smoother by assisting you in getting free, or taking advantage of the creatures concentration to attack any of its exposed weak points during the assault.

Which brings me to the second topic of the thread, weak points. In a universe as huge as Starbound, I'm really hoping lots of the creature bits used in generation will have varying amounts of defense, and perhaps even cause certain effects when damaged. A large eye popping up in a creature could be taken advantage of to blind the creature, leaving it open to capture or for an easy kill.

Once a creature has been crippled or otherwise severely handicapped, this could open up possibilities for executions. I can imagine two very easy animations for ALL executions, perhaps a third for particularly elusive creatures like ghosts or air elementals. (If such things exist) A character wielding a gun could adopt a dramatic aiming stance and fire a loud shot, dealing critical damage and probably kill the helpless defender in one hit. A melee character could do the dramatized dash past and sheath sword, follow by a Quentin Tarantino fountain. (Maybe the fountain scales with the gore settings)

    yes.

  4. This is more specific, being about weak points and teamwork in general.

I would love to have something like this! Being absent in Terraria, I dearly hope that this kind of nuanced combat system could be implementing -- making for strategy and tactics, in sharp contrast to the industry standard of button mashing.

Definitely yes. So much yes. I think executions have been debated in another thread and I don't remember the outcome but I am all for strategy in combat.

  6. The correct term is tactics ;)

    But what're executions? What context?

The executions (aka finishing moves) discussed in the first post of course. As for context.. I don't understand the question.

  8. I'd personally prefer not to have executions -- it requires a whole new set of sprites.

But of course, that's a conversation for elsewhere. Can you link me the thread?

That's essentially what the other thread came down to, also issues with how they look from different perspectives and just... relaly complicated for not much gain.

    I like the idea.
But one thing lots of stuff in Starbound cant be multiplayer-related since there is singleplayer as well.
Like reviving or assisting etc. but I'm not talking to you directly.

  12. Your squad members may be able to fill this role in, but the AI may be tricky :/

The cool thing about my proposed system is that everything is doable 100% solo. Whether it's because you're simply DODGING the grabs, damaging the right parts while pinned to escape, or making use of enemies' weak points BEFORE they grab you. All another players presence would do is let you fight on higher level plants before you'd normally be able to solo it. The addition of another player only makes things easier, though they were always doable.

This'd be good, say I'm trapped, pinned down by the said creature, if I could just manage to get out, swing on the vine over the giant chasm and land to safety, I think I'd be starred in a lot of movies, particularly action/James Bond ones, of course I would have to buy the essential sunglasses.

Love the idea, getting out of an enemy's trap instead of hopelessly being strangled would be awesome, especially thinking about the large amount of ways you could get out, kick his wrist, blind his eye, stab his back, damage his spinal cord and much more! (Assuming the creature is always a 'he'.)

Weak spots, good, you could add this to your log book, the creatures weak spot that hurts them the most, a massive eye perfectly good for aiming at with your bow the pupil marks 10 points. A certain claw, or both, so they cant hurt you as much as before.

Altogether, this is great and I really want this in-game or at least in a mod if they are available to be made and without stress.
