Grappling Hook, because gosh blast it to the nth dimension, I want to swing around like Spider-Man. It's the most fun thing about Spider-Man games, and I want such a thing to be in more games.

One of the biggest disappointments is when a game has a grappling mechanic, but you can't swing. Friggin cheat me, man.

The new system they made is so cool, so i vote for the new one! Though as Jonesy said, i think we'll have both :D

What is the difference between hook-shot and grappling hook?

Both? Use one to latch on to surfaces like a rock climber, while aiming whichever is the bungee-like one and then switching between that and the third option that would be the aforementioned Attack on Titan styled 2D maneouvering gear for ultimate momentum. Wheeee! As seen on the series, the control handles have detachable and discardable blades, so why not have optional dual wield pistol attachments for the fans of ranged combat...... must MOD this.

I retract my statements. I can see myself using that, and the bending string will make things much more flexible.

Grapple Beam from Super Metroid sounds cool too.
But that's because I'm an old gaming hipster, apparently.

Wasn't really that great only could be used in certain blocks unlike the one in this game that can used on any block. Also hipster has been used so many times in so many ways I no longer know if it has meaning.

Oh, it has a meaning. When the Internet latches onto a new dysphemism or way to hate, it gladly gets lockjaw.

I like the Grapple Beam because of its limitations. Challenge in level design has a bit more meaning with that kind of restriction.
I wouldn't mind having early level dungeons that only let you grapple to certain blocks with the basic grapple, and let the player grapple to new blocks as they find/build improved versions.

That was also sort of the appeal of progression in Super Metroid. The Space Jump renders the Grapple Beam effectively superfluous, but it's that sense of progression that made it worth getting in the first place.
(even the level segments leading up to the Space Jump were grapple-centric, like a send off. The alternative, easier way of beating the boss guarding the Space Jump requires the Grapple Beam)

That's great reason I dislike it is it's limitations, so I will agree to disagree with you. Also I personally find it dumb that hipster would be used to insult those that also like the past and don't just have a narrow minded the past sucked mentality.

They're both fun. I think building with the Grappling hook would be more challenging too

I personally like the idea of the grappling hook shown in the video.
picture this: You're at a ledge staring down into a dark chasm with no view of a safe landing. you shoot your grappling hook onto the floor or wall next to you and safely rappel downwards, flashlight in your off-hand to see if there's a safe spot to plant your feet.
That sounds more entertaining to me. but I could see a hookshot being of equal use as a good escape tool.

I prefer a hookshot, but both would be nice.

Grappling hook allows you to swing around, lower/raise yourself, and slingshot your character in various directions. See the video in the daily updates. Hook-shot simply shoots towards a target, and once it connects, pulls you toward the object. Like in Zelda and in Terraria.

It sounds like we'll have a whole variety though, and that is awezome. If we could only pick one though, definitely grappling hook for me. It kinda still has the versatility to be just like a hook-shot, right?

Something that functions like the Grapple Beam from Super Metroid would be fun.

For those that don't know what I'm talking about: Basically, you pressed forward and back to swing, and up and down to ascend or descend. It *looks* like that might be what they're working up to.

Yeah, I'm very intrigued by what could be in store for us as far as variety is concerned. So much potential with this one mechanic makes me all giddy!
