Just food for thought, I'm curious if people would prefer one or the other. To clarify what I'm meaning, I'm curious if you like the grappling hook like we saw in the demonstration/test video from the daily update the other day or if you'd prefer more of a hookshot style grapple that instantly drags you to the point of contact, similar to Terraria.

I'm honestly hoping we will have access to both kinds because I can see both being extremely useful and quite honestly, fun to play with. However, if we happen to be limited to one, which would you prefer?

Me personally, I'm looking forward to playing with the new grappling hook mechanics so my vote is for the grappling hook. Go ahead and cast your votes and comment if you feel like it, I'm interested in seeing what people think.

    Why don't we have both?

They both have their uses, but the current version (grappling hook) makes a lot more sense to me physics-wise.

I mean, I'd rather have 2D-maneuver gear, but I'll settle for this :p

If we did get a grapple that pulls you too the grapple point, I would like it to be human controlled unlike Terraria. Something more similar to the ninja rope in worms, where you control when it retracts.

I'm used to the Terraria hook shot so I want to say that but I know the grappling hook will have way more uses and be much more fun once i get the hang of it.
So I'm going to vote grappling hook

Exactly! I think of all the crazy whacky things you can do with the grappling hook from a physics perspective and it seems like all kinds of crazy fun. Add in planets with varying levels of gravity for more insane awesomeness!

By the way, it depends, but if you get one that can retract quickly enough, it could work the same way as a hookshot can, thus effectively being both at the same time.

Considering the grapple hooks have an elastic property that can be utilized for great launches I've been trying to figure out a means of using a wired system use a system of doors to extend the player as much as possible then all open for launching high in to the sky. If such a system is even possible.

But all pure speculation at this point since there's no way for me to fiddle with such an idea.

Tiy has stated that there will be different grappling hooks in Starbound with varying elasticity, length, swing speed, and retract speed (among other things.) So theoretically, if we can make a grapple with low elasticity/swing speed and high retract speed, we can get a grappling hook that works just like a hookshot.

We'll have to see how it's implemented of course, but I just love the idea of these things being customizable.

Sweet. Now I'm just hoping for a handsfree version.

Hooshots are great for gameplay, but the starbound's grapple ropes are more realistic. But I'd prefer practicality over realism. I prefer the hookshots like those in terraria, since they're better able to get me out of a tight spot.

i am rather saddened by the fact i cannot fill in both options for the poll.

    on topic :
i like the system they are using. with practice, the grappling hook can get you around/over/under/inside many things. it took a long time to make it work but i think the mechanics are all there.

eh, hockshots are effective but i feel like if i where using one in real life, my arm would be ripped right out of it's fleshy socket. can't complain though! rather useful when it's inside a game.

Edit : because to me, they are the same deal. i got the two mixed up.

How's a hookshot more realistic? If there was a winch capable of yanking a full grown person straight towards the anchor point it'd dislocate the wielder's arm. I think you mean grappling hooks are more realistic. Terraria's grapple behaves more like a hookshot.

Wait, I meant the other way around. I meant that Terraria's hookshot is less realistic, but more useful. Sorry about the confusion.

Sorry I didn't put in a 'both' option in the poll. I just wanted to see what people would choose if they had to pick one over the other...so maybe I'm not sorry mwahahahahahaha!!!! ...... I'm sorry :(

Did the devs decide on calling it a grappling hook? I thought it was ninja rope for a while.

That may be a Worms reference.

I dunno. I mean, at 31s and 46s it showed you're still able to retract it pretty quickly when you want to.

I hope for both. And particularly all three kinds of grappling hooks from terraria (the basic one, doube-hook and the vine-whip), as well as the one demonstrated in the daily update video.
Planning on figure out the optimal "settings" and position of hooks to get maximum fling once the game comes out.
