Go play Aquaria, it'll give you some new-found respect for the Hylotl race.

It's on sale on Steam right now too, along with quite a good selection of other indie games to celebrate the release of the Steam client for Linux. There are some very good games in there, it's definitely worth a look.

Also, I know you said not Minecraft, but I recommend adding some game changing mods and a new texture pack.
    Also, Blockland is alright.

Junk Jack on ios deserves a mention here, very good 2d Terraria style game on iphone/pad: sandbox building/fighting/mining/farming animals/crops, multiple biomes, teirs of ore and equipment... you know the format by now.

I played for 30+hrs without considering that a serious stab at the total content available. Something like 300+ recipies to find (and yes in game encyclopedia to help remember them all) and regular content updates.

I hope the dev's don't find this thread in poor taste, talking about other games, but we do need to keep busy in the interim and playing Junk Jack has actually got me more excited about playing starbound which looks like such a step forward in the Genre.

Play some Castlevania if you want the same 2D fighting and platformer feeling.

Starbound is pretty unique. But you could try one of the other popular sandbox games that it was inspired by, like Terraria or Minecraft. Those two are the most obvious similar games I can think of.

Spore Galactic Adventures! I had pretty good time reminding myself this game lately. My old computer could hardly run it on lowest settings (Minutes of loading!), while now i can play on max. Game is pretty simple but fun.

I guess you could try Darkout if you want to blow $15, but honestly that game sucks. I hated it so much...and I rarely hate games.

I found this game on steam greenlight a while a go: http://playsignsoflife.com/ . It's not out yet, but i will definitely try it if it's out before starbound =)

I want to stay far away from games that are similar to Starbound until it comes out. I want to be one hundred percent not bored with that type of game when I get it , if that makes any sense.
