Good names for non-humans

I know one of my planets will be named Bob. Are we naming planets? 'cause Bob is best planet.

i already know what i'll name my characters
i'm not so creative when it comes to names, so i always end with a bunch of characters named Lobo, or named after food, like; lettuce, cake, donut...
i just wanted to see what the community would come up with

wow, that's a good way of choosing names!

but i really expected something different...
since every race is based on a human culture, their names could share the same phonetic characteristics (guttural sounds for florans, lack of "L" and "staccato" pronunciation for hylotl...), but they aren't humans, so i wanted some differences, like not using the traditional syllabes, if that makes any sense

on a side note: thanks to your perspective over the races' cultures, i just noticed that WE DON'T HAVE A PIRATE RACE!

What would pirates be though? They can't just be a race with pirate hats

 

hm... roleplay-wise, they'd be a loud, savage, drunk race, with low to none moral rights and even less hygiene!
their clothings could be based off of rags, their buildings are stone-wood based and their mechs could be some badass pirate-ship stylized ones

I think that if its a non-human character, put yourself in the mind of a non-human character. When you first understand communications, and realize that you need a name, make it something that you would first see or hear. Mine personally would be Bo, because its short, simple, and it could be used with practically any race. "Alien" names are commonly short, and use characters that are not usually paired with one another. Examples of names: Lok; Bor; Tak; Oru; Mul; Azu... It's more realistic to have a name that's not too long and complex anyways. You wouldn't want a name that's a common English name, or something that's in a foreign language that represents something, like naming your character the Chinese word for War or something.

 

Not much variation though...MAYBE THEY COULD BE LIKE LIZARD PEOPLE AND THEY COULD BE CALLED SOMALIANS

 

Rover, Spike, Bones, Sebastian, Ein... I can go on.

but lizard pirate people isn't a bad idea at all! (although it won't be that funny to name a lizard character "harold pig-leg"...)

i though it'd be cool to have a pirate race cause it seems like starbound races are focusing immensely on their cultural references, and pirate culture is one of the richests, and surely the most romanticized of all human cultures in history

If it was a pirate race though, what do you think the race would be called? It wouldn't be "pirate," it would probably be something nomadic and ancient sounding. Similar to the Orcish names in the Elder Scrolls series, i hope?

 

hm, well... unlike their aesthetics, starbound races' names aren't based on cultural references, but on their genetic characteristics (apex are apes, florans are flowers...)
if they were lizards, they could be named "reptars", "draculs", if they were pigs, they could be "boarians", or something like that (i hope someone can think of better names tho)

 

Based on Starbound's races so far, that's probably the most accurate we can decide on what their races would be named. I still think that it would be pretty cool though if we did have a race similar to what you were talking about earlier, the pirates. But i wouldn't think that the creators would make another human race, i think that a pirate would be based purely on role-playing into your own unique story for your character. I just really hope that, with all of the new additions to Starbound using unique races, characters and everything, that it brings the aspect of role-players to the game.
