Also for those of you who say that the AI is a horse because they ride horses as transportation, may I show you this picture:
Glitch Horse.jpg As you can see, the Glitch do ride horses, but the horses they ride are also robots. I get that a spaceship is like their horse, but if that's so, then the AI should also be a horse. I'd be fine with a horse robot, boobs or not.

Why does the Glitch AI blink? Is it another actual secret race communicating to the Glitch (your character)?

I don't think having in-depth lore prevents a game or any other form of entertainment media from having humor and/or pop culture references, and still "work". Look at stephen kings dark tower series for instance. In many of his books, with a few exceptions, king built up a fantasy universe with many cross references to certain characters, worlds, and general metaphysics (see: the stand, IT, desperation, the regulators, insomnia). The dark tower series basically compiled it and expanded it, and the result is a very lore-heavy, dark universe that's like the wizard of oz meets a spaghetti western. However, a lot of the charm came from pop culture references and just plain wackyness, like for instance a murderous sentient monorail that forces it's captives to solve riddles. A better example in literature could be the discworld books, but I'm not very familiar with them though I understand the universe is VERY out there as well. In video games I would point to the fallout series as an example that has great lore but doesn't take itself seriously. I don't think great lore and general wackyness are mutually exclusive though I'm sure some people disagree and they are entitled to their opinions.

I wasn't following the lore of the game prior to the beta release (and honestly still don't care about it) so I'm not aware of what info was available at the time, but I think it's a fair complaint to not like the tone of the game if you didn't go into it expecting all the silliness and references. I personally think the horse fits with the general tone that the devs seem to be going for, but that's just one man's opinion I guess.

So let me try to see what lore reasons we MIGHT have behind each AI so far:

    1. Avian -> Avian technology is based on crystals as energy storage modules and as data storage. They build all their technology on that. Therefor their AI is a "crystal matrix"
    2. Human -> We are liking ourself a bit too much, feeling save with something we know. Therefor the AI is something neutral we dont recognize as something new which barely resembles a human being.
    3. Apex -> Big Ape is their leader. The Apex ship you have is hijacked from their gouverment from what I can tell... or so. Means their AI is a represantation of Big Ape. Would be cool though if you could change that by an upgrade to an apex with Tier 10 armor.
    4. Floran -> Adapting other species technology, salvaging those, using them for their own. Salvaged and hacked human AI adapted to fit floran needs. Means aggressive behavior. Took severe damage while adapting which means it flashes.
    5. Hylotl -> From what I know they are very respectfull to their kind, and they are very close to our easthern cultures. The Hylotl AI is an old, wise looking man (also looks kinda stereotypical)... but from what I know people in that cultures (easthern cultures) respect old people alot, alot more then we do here. The AI should be an advisor, a help. Old respected people are usually also advising. Means that appearence kinda fits to it.
    6. Glitch -> Honestly I have absolutly no idea... a single clue maybe which might be related to the species creating the glitch. But then why again not making them (the glitch) look like horses and instead like humanoid/humanlike beings. Its confusing... and hopefully they have a good reason behind this. I would want to know what kind of planet allows that type of life... a humanoid horse. I am not questioning other species, because there you can kinda get ideas how those are superior to other species... but a horse... the head size seems relativly unhelpfull in combination with walking upright... Rather something more compact... like Apex, Humans, Hylotl, Avian or ironicly their creation have. Seriously I am clueless on the lore reason behind that AI.

Ok will do, its your fault that that Titaniumdioxid takes alot of time to purify it ;)

I mean when you get an oppurtunity like that why not using it ^^

My best guess was that in addition to the ship -> ride -> horse -> medieval connection, they were aiming for something surreal. Wouldn't be the first bit of surrealism to show up in the artistic tastes of the Glitch ("Persistence of Pixels," if I remember the name of the Glitch version of a certain painting correctly).

Yeah, Persistence of Memory (or Pixels if you're a Glitch). Looking over at the Starbounder wiki, the Glitch PC comment on the painting even mentions that surrealist art might be a subconscious acknowledgement among the hivemind Glitch of their artificial nature, even if they consciously deny it.

  11. So the point of the ship AI might be that it's their Surrealist take on AI.

That could be indeed some kind of connection to the horse, yeah. And let me see... surrealistic = impossible in reality I'd assume. That could fit indeed to it, or be the reason for it to look like that. Though it needs to be explained propper then where the connection is if thats really the case... they dont mind their AI (ofc not), they dont even recognize it how we recognize it. Thats actually a tricky explanation.

Maybe more like that what they see in it is not what we see in it. They maybe see something different then others see in it. And since we are humans its a kinda tricky, a little bit messy but still interesting explanation that it appears to be a horse to us, but for the Glitch its something else. Breaking the 4th wall kinda.

Or just an AI that happens to be of surreal design because the Glitch like surrealism. Something to that effect.

  14. If the connection between the Glitch and their AI is really surrealist design -- I'm going to change my stance from disliking the AI to thinking it's awesome.

I've said it a hundred times. There's nothing inherently wrong with the AI. What is wrong, however, is that only one of six current races has a bad joke for an AI. Even if the joke was funny to begin with (and it's really not), novelty is a critical component of humour. A joke told a dozen times gets old fast. The average person may chuckle the first couple of times they go to their ship, but horsetits loses her comedic edge rather quickly after that.

Add to that the fact that the subset of the playerbase that will actually be using the AI is not the same group of people who find it funny. It will be people who like the Glitch. People who find the idea of playing as a sentient robot cool. People who have always enjoyed races like the Cylons or the Borg or the Geth in their sci-fi. The fact is that in general, people select their race based on their personal interpretation of the Rule of Cool, and horsetits flies in the face of that. She directly detracts from the appeal of the race for a lot of us. If devs announced any plans to allow us to select our AI, this whole debate would disappear overnight. Instead, they seem to have decided that they'd rather provoke and mock the dissenters, because how dare we not like their first-draft of everything?

I find it absolutely incomprehensible that this debate has gone in this direction. The professional approach to stylistic differences between a creator and a client is compromise. This is something I've learned something about while running a video production company for the last seven years. I produce videos for people who often know very little about cinematography or the production process, and creative differences arise on a fairly regular basis. When this happens, I communicate with my clients, try to understand the nature of their concerns, and offer up suggestions about how we might accommodate both their goals and our logistical needs and limitations. Even when I'm dealing with a particularly difficult client, one who tries to bully us or impose their will on us financially, I still make an effort to keep a cool head while debating the issue, and to find some common ground. I do not go to my cameraman and start making fun of them while they're standing ten feet away.

The only significant difference between my situation and CFs is the scale of the audience. Obviously, we can't all sit down and hammer out a solution that satisfies everybody. Fortunately, CF doesn't have to - the solution is obvious, and has been suggested countless times. Don't make the AIs racially-restricted. This is a game about options and variety; why in the world would you make such a central element mandatory?

And as a final note, "mod it out" is a terrible solution. Mods can be abandoned, or can be bugged due to being created by an amateur programmer, or can lag significantly behind the release of new updates. They can also be vetoed by server operators. "Mod it in" makes much more sense, since the people who support horsetits would probably be just as happy with one of the other AIs, in such circumstances. I haven't seen many people seriously saying, "Horsetits is the only AI I ever want to use", but I've seen plenty of people saying, "I really don't want to use horsetits".

Meh. It certainly helps me appreciate it more, but I'm staying in the "please change it" camp, if only for the same reason I mentioned the Americans Hate Tingle trope: The first impression was still terrible, and that is something that cannot be changed at this point. (Keeping it around in some way, just not as the Glitch default, would still be the best option IMO.)

Edit: As an explanation - the surrealist connection isn't one I myself readily arrived at. Registering why people complain about the unintentional similarity to a certain meme was a connection I made far sooner, unfortunately, and is likely to still be the default first impression a number of people will have.

Well, Nintendo kept Tingle around and has made him a bigger part of games, as well as giving him his own game, so I think CF should keep on the track and stand behind their creation.

Which seems to be what they are doing, so good on them for standing their ground.

  20. Like I mentioned before. Totally a secret race communicating with the Glitch. Horse-people expansion confirmed.
