Glitch/Avian common background

I noticed that both the Avians and the Glitch reference a race much more powerful than them. The Glitch were created by another race, while the Avians had their development assisted. My guess is that they're the same race, and might play a part in every race's backstory. I'm calling them the Predecessors. Thoughts?

Good call, I think its highly likely they're the same race. And also likely we'll meet them in Starbound's plot at some point. ;)

I like Predecessors. It's generic, and leaves some mystery than a name where you have to spit out.

It makes it seems like they would be just tenticals, and I can't take them seriously

Do you think that Glitch's came with instruction manuals?

  6. Those who helped the Avians and built the Glitch could be the same race, yeah. I can see that being so for a good use of lore/story. However, I also wouldn't be surprised if Chucklefish decided to go with more than one 'Predecessor' race, so that the Avians and Glitch wouldn't be linked that way. We'll have to wait and see. Or maybe we'll never know... :X

On a similar note, this keeps coming to my mind. :p

I'm not sure they are the same. The Avians were uplifted only a couple of hundred years before meeting the glitch. The Glitch were already starbound at that point. I guess they could be the same, but I was under the impression the glitch were created much earlier in order to simulate the rise and fall of civilization.

The glitch's opening lore ends with their makers leaving them alone, instead of possibly helping the Glitch bypass their programming logic to see how things would turn out. They also allowed all the other races they created to self destruct, except the one that couldn't achieve that. Won't you find it weird they decided to aid the Avians and granting them technology when they've only watched from afar to see how things turned out? Given the lore of the universe, I won't be surprised if there are other races that are as technologically advanced as the glitch makers which were involved in the advancement or subjugation of weaker races they encounter.

Wouldn't it be interesting if the Predacessors were the same for both races? The robots would be the simulation that showed that giving advanced technology to a race that is not socially ready will destroy that race (by giving them the power to destroy themselves). The Glitch proved this true in a corollary way - they didn't get the advanced tech, so they survived. Now, the Preds gave advanced technology to the Avians as the first "living" test to see if doing so is in fact the greatest way to destroy an entire race with almost no effort.

Interesting, but the glitch at that point is more advanced than the Avians, since they helped upgrade the Avian tech, they're just stuck in their medieval mindset, not the technological state. I would think they have some sort of knightly code or conduct that disallows them from throwing away pride and honour just to wreak havoc. Also, I don't think it is beyond the glitch makers to create living/organic races to conduct their experiment on. Maybe they just have a thing for races blowing up their own homworlds.

I like the concept and ideal, I also think it will work well because the "Predecessors" might be the same ones that destroy your home planet.

May be the glitch experiment failed so hard that they decided to rethink there approach on racial experiments so they aided the avians in hopes that it would help the cause

Sentient black holes! . wait what? oh wrong thread. ... so avians were lifted up by their god analogue, glitch were part of an experiment, Apex ( not really but maybe) were monolith-ed into being genius's, humans have various "gods" ( in real life), the florans probably worship the sun, and we know very little of the hylotl my bet is that whatever created the glitch, lifted the avians, inspired the religions of the humans and put the monolith on the apex planet are all the same race/sentient ocean/black hole. And the "experiment" never really ended. OH also the first people to come down to the floran planet and thus grant them space travel were influenced by the predecessor.

I don't know, it's possible, but seems somewhat unlikely to me. Story-wise, it would be an interesting plot device, but...well some things just don't seem to match up if you ask me. The race that made the Glitch seems almost cruel to me, experimenting using sentient beings to test, only for them all to destroy themselves, which they probably knew would happen anyway. When the Glitch survived, they were just abandoned to their unfortunate fates as an "experiment gone wrong". It's implied that the 'Precursors' abandoned the project entirely. As for the Precursors that helped the Avians, they seem nice enough, I mean they knew the Avians were probably doomed and they saved them by giving them technology, right? Doesn't that see like a kind thing to do, taking pity on a lesser race? It just seems like the two Precursor personalities don't match up. It could always be just a change in leadership or a different group of them, but...I don't know. And suggesting that they destroy the character's home planet seems wrong too. I mean, the ones who made the Glitch, maybe. But the ones who saved the Avians? I sort of doubt they'd attack the char's planet for no good reason if they were willing to assist the Avians before out of charity. Again, just my silly opinion, but...

well my opinion is rather silly as well :D also a changing of the leadership of the predecessor's race seems like that would work or if it is just one sentient omnipotent entity well minds can change opinions so its possible if this thing lives forever and has always existed then time would be meaningless to it and the spaces of time inbetween events are irrelevant. also i think you meant it as a reply to someone else but i don't think the predecessor(s) would intentionally destroy someone's home planet, ( or maybe it got bored and just did it for fun!) but maybe gave the people living there too much technology to the point where they self destructed.
