Maybe the character's name really is " ".

While I agree with the last part (that there is always a chance of it raining doom), do we have any real evidence that the background craters or the presence of an asteroid field have any real correlation to the meteor weather event?

Not really, and there have been several people stating that they experienced meteor showers on planets with no crater background and no asteroid fields in the system.

Has anyone experienced ZERO meteors on a planet that has craters on the image?

Good advice, except my starter system had:
    • NO asteroid fields
    • NO impact craters in the background
Neither did 2 of the other 5 planets I tried. The sixth one seems to have stayed stable and free of giant rage meatballs though. And I've been 3 hours into it and encountered heavy rain and pixie rain, and that's it. Crossing my fingers on this one.

So I didn't really pay attention to the background, and the nice mountains and part of my garden are now a nice crater taking up most of the screen. (Background of the planet does have craters.)

1.) Has anyone verified that, yes, planets without craters in the background won't get giant meteors?

2.) Is there a good way to defend against them? In Terraria, so long as you had a shield 1 block thick, the meteor would land on the dome, and your structure would be safe. Does it work for Starbound, as well? Or will it happily obliterate anything in its path?

I tend to spend a little time on a planet before I start building extensively to check for those things. And I was planning to build underground with a super hard top layer anyway.

From an IC perspective... whatever gods there are must hate me, because these things only happen near me. And residents get killed by monsters seeming only when I'm around. The Gods hate me. I must kill them.

I do wonder is say you have a big house and you cannot see your roof, will the meteors just fall into your house like the oh so destructive rain does?

Meteors exploding houses? That would make a great use for shields then. A shield generator that consumes energy, with a bigger shield to cover a wider area costing more energy. Which would make for fuel use and energy generators. Makes a big bubble around the area of effect, and you can add more shields in other locations as needed, instead of one giant bubble. The shield would allow slower moving things (like you and mobs) to pass right through, but would prevent high velocity things (like bullets, missiles, or meteors) from passing through. Like a Goa'uld's personal shield device (which I don't think would stop a meteor).

Less explody stuff, shields, energy consumption/generation, and Stargate references. What's not to like?

That does lead me to wonder... what's stronger? Obsidian, Magma rock, blaststone rock? Something else I haven't encountered yet?

I don't think location of asteroid fields has any effect upon whether or not you get hit by meteors. My starting planet has an asteroid field right next to it and has yet to be hit by anything at all.

Such things are fine in my opinion, aslong as there is actually a consistency in how they work and the player has a way to know what he/she is getting into.

If meteors were limited to systems with, for example an asteroid field in it. If a visual was given like, a planet background with meteors always has craters in the background and those who dont get meteors dont get the craters.

Then it gave the player enough reasonable warning from the moment he enters the system, and confirmation the moment he lands on a planet.
Meteors also shouldnt be a "weather" in my opinion. Such things are more fiting of a seperate catagory.

I lost my tree nursery :( I can't wait for a weather station that can change the planets' weather and make is something nicer like rain. I like rain.
