  1. This is an idea for a lycanthropic planet, which is a cute, idyllic world, where all the creatures are adorable and even the landscape is nauseatingly cute. In the daytime, that is.

    Wildlife

During the day, the landscape is like something out of the most unbearably cutesy cartoon, with brightly coloured flowers everywhere and blossoms on the trees. The local wildlife is cute, but not necessarily friendly (the poptops will still be hungry!). This all changes when night comes, as the terrible sound of monstrous snarls an roars echo over the landscape...

You still encounter the same animals, but they are horribly changed. The peacefully grazing horses suddenly bare fangs and charge, snorting angrily as their eyes begin to glow bright red. The poptops reveal their hideous true forms and become more powerful and aggressive. The songbirds transform into vicous birds of prey with oversized talons and serrated beaks. And its not just the creatures that are affected.

    Night Landscape

The landscape changes every night. The trees become twisted and blackened, lashing out with their branches whenever someone comes near. The flowers become vicous sucker-mouths, siezing any living thing that gets too close and draining their blood. Vines lash out and try to strangle anyone passing below. Even the rock and earth turn dark and ominous. The physical properties of all local materials change during the night, but become fixed in their present state when mined. Some materials actually become dangerous and inflict damage when touched (but can still be safely picked up once mined).

    Intelligent Life
There may be civilised or tribal life-forms living on worlds of this kind, but they are all lycanthropes, changing into werewolves every night (not just during a full moon), and turning feral and unpredictable. Players may have to cope with entire cities that are friendly by day, but crawling with werewolves by night!

    The Underground

The upper layers of the underground are also affected by the time of day, with giant moles that turn into vicous killers at night. Deeper underground, however, things seem to take an unnatural turn. The time of day no longer affects the creatures, because they're ALWAYS nasty. They appear to be nothing but wild hair, fangs and claws. At the core of the planet lingers the source of these creatures, as well as the nighttime transformations.

The core is a boss enemy called the Heart of Evil. This creature is randomly generated, consisting of multiple limbs connected to a single central mass. Different variants of this creature behave in different ways, some lashing out with their limbs, others using a variety of ranged attacks, and still others using a combination of ranged and melee attacks. If you kill it, it melts away, revealing a strange, red stone embedded in rock. Mining this stone, called the Bloodstone, freezes the planet in its current state (cutesy if its daytime, nasty if its night). The day/night cycle continues, but the landscape and creatures are no longer affected by it. Replacing it anywhere underground restores the transformative night and day effect.

Any thoughts, as always, are welcome.

  2. Wow. That died fast. I guess this is another failure. :(

Not really, it's a really well organized thread and the ideas are awesome. Anyways, on to topic.
I don't really think everything (Somethings can still be mutated though, but not that horribly!) should be like mutated and stuph cause everything will be... You know, not really that cute or funny . And as for the materials in the night that can harm you, I think that's a great idea cause people would be more aware during the night and will probably keep on their toes (Cause getting scared is pretty funny at the same time!). However, making flowers drink blood is just way too creepy dude (Where did you get that idea anyway o_O?). And as for the underground part, the concept is really great and awesome but maybe the boss of each planet in the Heart of Evil could each have different characteristics (Like one lashing out with worms and stuph but the other spewing out acids) so you can't just memorize 1 thing and you're good to go at each boss on every planet. Dude, awesome thread and love it too!

  4. ~~Edit~~
Well, the idea is that the world will be cute, but only during the day. Essentially, the entire planet is one huge lycanthrope, becoming a ferocious monster at night. Any intelligent life on its surface would be werewolves.

Well i like the whole idea, but i find this a little weird. The planet would just stop spinnning around its sun or what? Maybe it would just lock the monsters that spawn?

Also i dont mean this in a negative way, only trying to make it better ^^

  6. The planet continues to turn, but the landscape and creatures are no longer affected by the day/night cycle (Editing this in).

I like it... blood-sucking flowers... angry trees... very good! Of course, I'd probably almost be vomiting in the day, but night would make up for that.

Maybe some planets loose all their heat at night, freezing the player to death

That's a little harsh on the natives on the planet don't you think ? (But if your like pro enough maybe you can take on all of the monsters heading for you since maybe it's for people with better gear).

giving Revival, yes I like the idea, in some ways it depends which planet ur in that monster become more crazy or something like that.

I support this idea fully. I feel there should be a VERY hostile feeling to some planets. And this idea would catch anyone by surprise. Marines, looking around in fear as the sun finally sets just below the horizon and horrific roars and screams of rage echo throughout the jungle, accompanied by a gust of wind that stirs the trees in the forest around them. The trees that are now viciously pounding their twisted, gnarled branches against the flimsy outside wall of the forward outpost.

Sorry. Went a bit fan-fic there. Goood idea.

I have to say its a good idea too. one thing that takes away from a game is when your realy over powered and everything is a walk in the park. This biome sounds like it would be a bit of an end game chalenge.

When you kill them, they should transform back into their daytime form just before they die, to add that last little touch of creepiness and a feeling of betrayal. Maybe have their death animation be them turning human again, reaching towards you from the ground and then collapsing, dead.
