Oh no doubt, when I say lazy I am talking about the design, and really its like if someone were to make a perfect replica of the Mona Lisa. Sure, its a tough job, but its lazy, its just a replica.

I'm not saying the cat mecha things are replicas, but it wouldn't be tough to give them a defining alien trait that makes it pretty clear that they aren't actually cats piloting robots, and thus pleasing both the people that want cats piloting mechs (god knows why) and the people that want to be immersed.

EDIT: Hell and with the Po

Seriously sentient Mr Whippy style shit is also fairly droll. Its so damn kawai uguu~ that it dispels any illusions of immersion, and I'm an anime fan. desu~.

EDIT 2: I'm just going to add.

Silly things are fine, in moderation. If I get this game and the first planet I beam down to is shaped like the inner anus of a howler monkey I'm going to ask for a refund. If I don't get it, I'll just forget all about Chucklefish.

I am just glad they are making it their way with a healthy dose of community input, rather than dictated by the community at the sake of their vision

Good combination of silly, serious and fantastical. Gotta have variety.

Cats in mechs and poop monsters may seem a little silly, but it won't affect how immersed I am in game. For me it's often gameplay mechanics that do that with little reminders like invisible walls, bad voice acting etc.

I get that some don't like the idea, it's the ones that act like it's a deal breaker that confuse me. Like their cat died building a mech or they were touched by Mr Hanky or something.

I guess it all depends on just how much each is utilized. As it stands, I can't see either ruining the game for me, unless the story focuses on one or the other too much. Are they just another mob that stands in my way of exploring, or will there be a whole quest line with them as the focal point?

Oh look this thread again, and here I thought the general dislike and malcontent for the Po had been laid to rest by now.

I'm in-different, if the game had nothing silly, slapstick, or whimsical, I'd ask for a refund immediately, I don't like my games to be super-serious, that bores the shit out of me to be honest, there has to be humor in there somewhere, otherwise it just gets boring fast for me. I don't mind them going over the top with the Po, especially where it's a unique mob you won't run into that often from what I'm guessing.

@Sousuke- Why would you ask for a refund, instead of beaming to one of the other 400 quadrillion planets? This type of logic is what gives gamers a bad reputation as a bunch of whiners who can't be pleased, who have to have everything their way or else.

I'd guess so. What they don't realize is that it's a bit too late to complain.

The Internet gives even the most mild mannered and soft spoken of us the ability to continue to beat every dead horse we see well into the ground and beyond.

  9. truefully, it doesn't matter if we like it or not, its thier game they can do what they want.

but I do like the look of starbound and the over all cute look of things( not all things) gives a bit f a reprieve to the darker story line.

I feel bad for this horse, it's going to be a bloody pulp soon, what did it ever do to deserve such a fate...

If you have no plans of making any profit - then yes, other's opinions don't really matter. Sure, "indie" teams have more freedom in this matter, but I woudn't disregard a matter of profit completely. Making a game-of-dream is cool, but if you plan on keeping it's servers afloat and continue improving it later you have to think about it being at least slightly profitable.

In case with "serious" look of the game devs are free to appeal to both categories - who want a game with lots of "funny" stuff and to those who want slightly more serious stuff (I will write this in caps, so that there is no way you've missed it: SOME PEOPLE EXPECT STARBOUND SEROUSNESS LEVEL TO BE SLIGHTLY ABOWE "SILLY" - NOT GRIM, NOT MORBID, NOT AS SERIOUS AS BEING EXECUTED FOR MASS MURDER - JUST NOT BEING ALL ABOUT SILLY STUFF - READ : INCLUDING BOTH "FUNNY" STUFF AND "NOT-SO FUNNY" STUFF).

Majority of people who displayed they concerns regarding game's "mood" don't ask for completely serious game. Having some goofy stuff among everything else is ok. Game is obviously planned to be light-hearted, that's ok. We just ask that the balance is not shifted towards only silly stuff. (Almost) noone asks to remove it alltogether. Just balance it with more serious themes (having only serious intro is not enough).

Its a near infinite game. There has to be silliness or we'd get bored of it.
The funny monster generation is good enough for me though...

I prefer serious stuff, but Starbound seems lighthearted by core design, so I am ambivalent to silliness in game.

Just understood that in general I prefer fiction to be serious, while real life issues and actions are welcome to be silly. Probably because it's harder to do both.

Right now the big controversy about the games 'direction' centers around silly things because of the announcement of the Po... because of that I think your poll might get skewed.

There's those who absolutely hate the Po and have come to the forums to rant and rave about it. They will likely vote that they hate it.

There's those who love the Po, they will vote that they love it.

But then there's people who just honestly want Starbound to be great and don't like to see the threads about "this sux wtf r chuckfish dooeng?" who will probably just vote Love It! to spite all the haters.

I feel like that third group is a very large one, so you might get some extra love. *queue smooth jazz*

  20. I think it all ties in together nicely with the whole style, but the one thing that I don't like is the aliens/monsters/creatures that have smiling faces. It kinda creeps me out and annoys me at the same time lol, you're shooting or slashing away at something that never stops smiling.. That's the creepy part lol. The annoying part is they don't have to be smiling the whole time.

Other than that it's all fantastic and have no complaints.
