Gender Neutral PCs

But would there ever be an actual way to make the PC gender neutral?

 

Woa I didn't mean to start a fame war. I just don't understand why people want to take the Life out of life. I Dun get it in 1337 terms.

 

So you are saying that Your gender and Procreation have no interconnection? Well there is where I get confused and. Last I checked a penis and a Vagina "Birthing matrix" created life. (Specifically the combination of a sperm and an egg.) Oh and by the way, the term "Homosexual (Gay)" means you prefer the sexual accomplament of the same Sex as yours, If you guys don't want gender labels then don't use gay, I mean it isn't even a gender. Simple right?

 

Yep. Provide an option to allow the user the ability to create a character based on appearance rather than choosing "male" or "female".

I'm still confused about what you're trying to say. Really, I'm not trying to be rude, but what are you talking about?

The game doesn't involve reproduction, so what do your baby-making comments have to do with this thread?

Try this out: Go to the character gen. Create a woman with small boobs. Oh, you can't because that isn't an option. Your female has stock boobs. Now try to make a male character that has pig-tails. Nope. Chuck Testa. Now make a Glitch character that is neither male or female. Nope. Can't be done. Glitch actually have biological sex in this game because of the limited choices at character gen.

Again. The suggestion asks to remove the male/female option and replace it with 2 body types that are compatible with ALL hair styles/clothing. More options. Not less.

 

What the meaning is why take out something that is undeniable true? If you are not going to have the Unspecific option then why take away "Male / female" options if people are just going to make it look like a male or a female? I think that is what you are trying to get at, Or I am wrong and you just want the ability to choose any character model.( I misspelled Flame sorry)

I wasn't responding to you. I was responding to another user who said they didn't want to see dudes kissing in public.

I am saying that gender identity and procreation (which is connected to sexual preference) are not directly connected. If they were, gays, lesbians and lots of other people would not exist.

The reason I brought up gay is because of you insinuating that who you have sex with is determined by your parts. You also decreed that procreation is the most important thing in life, so I was sort of reminding you that people like me exist. Because of the people I like, I am never going to procreate.

 

So rather then just removing gender representations for male or female, couldn't they just add options to the male/female selections that allow you to make them more androgynous (though really aside from slight alterations, there isn't really much you can do, what with the pixelness of the character sprites)?

 

Elaborate on this "gender Identity" Please. If you have a penis you are "Identified" as Male and if you have a vagina you are "Identified" as a Female. So then in procreation, you would have the hot bed with the other sex to make a child. Am I wrong?

 

Yea, that seems like a reasonable solution. Except I'm not really suggesting we add any new character sprites (although the character gen will probably be way more advanced by the time the full release comes out anyway).

This is confusing for people because I think people are assuming I'm asking for a much larger change than I'm actually suggesting. I really just want a person to have the freedom to go in, make a character that fills any identity they want to create. If a transgendered person, who has the identity of a man, but the body of a woman approaches the game, they need to make a choice: either male or female. Well, this individual identifies as male, but might want the body of female. They might even want to choose from the male hair/clothing styles but can't because they chose the stock female body type. There is a discrepancy here that can be easily avoided without ruining the game for the majority.

Oi vey dude. It is not my job to educate you. Go forth, educate yourself in the future. Sex is defined by your chromosomes. They tell your hormone levels what to be at, and this develops your genitals and your secondary sex characteristics. Gender is how you identify; man, woman, neither, both. These two things (once again, sex, and gender) are not the same thing. One is primarily biological, the other social.

 

They wouldn't really have to add new character sprites (though with the resolution of character sprites, would they even be able to have that many intermediate body types?), they could sort of add some option that can be checkmarked that allows the selection of parts from the other selection.

I think it is seen as a much larger change due to most forms/things you have to enter your gender (whatever you want to call it) usually just having male or female as option (unless I am just forgetting them adding some other option). That being said, will the players gender ever actually pop up in game at any point?

 

Both of those things complicate things, I agree. I always thought the third option (which could just allow you to pick from either binary category) would be the simplest.

 

Actually, when you register on this forum it asks []male, []female, []unspecified. They do this because they know that not everybody wants to be identified, or simply does not identify.

Unfortunately, I don't know. I've asked the dev's a few times, but I've never gotten a response. Probably don't want to spoil anything. It doesn't seem likely to me that NPC's will ever reference the player in the third person ("Hey, did you see that guy/gal?"), so I would guess not.. I could be wrong though. Gendered character pronouns could be an important part of the game that my suggestion would make really complicated.

 

You don't even need the male-female selectors, just the body style. That would prevent the politicking that might happen.

 

Actually little to no "politicking" has happened about this, save for this thread. The male-female selectors should stay right where they are. Another option can be added, but the male-female should not be removed.

 

If the option is added, then the buttons do nothing, if the buttons do nothing (except for determine pronouns if they are so added) then they are placebo buttons. I hate placebo buttons, I feel as though I have been lied to. Therefore I think that the buttons should be removed.

Also, Starbound and its developers is far too small if someone like FOX news (Or any number of similar organizations) decides to take arms against them, they could damage the game, Chucklefish, or the developers themselves. Even if the risk is tiny, there are some very simple ways around it. There's no real reason for the buttons to be there in the first place other than to make the screen resemble other character creation screens slightly more.
