They are! and there is only Diamonds in this game!!

In all seriousness thought, this has been bugging me for a while but.... why is there only diamonds in the universe? we can find different kinds of fuel, different kinds of radioactive materials... and a plethora of X type resources, but what happened to gems? Rubies, Sapphires, Emeralds? one could make an obvious assumption that something that requires a catalyst to project an image, or a focused artificial light (thats means "Laser" for you) would need an object capable of focusing, detracting, and overall amplifying said light with a different color spectrum to increase its capabilities (such as old red lasers and blurays).

Therefore, in an hypotethical future where laser tools are commonplace, wouldnt it be extremely important to have a wide variety of such outrageous gems? giving weapons and tools different effects? or just boosting their capabilities? I would feel my trips to hell to be far more rewarding if I had the possibility of stumbling upon such outrageous twinkling gems to add, modify or simply sell (hello fetch quests) to make a solid income, increase the utility, or temporally (as in take it off, put another gem to change its effect) of a tool or weapon.

The applications could vary from idea to idea, and tool to tool, but it could also tackle the strange... alienatising mechanic of "make your hard earned incomes turn into boxes, put those boxes in a very cost-inefficient outdated machine from 1920 to get back only 60% of your savings" what the pixel saving system is ATM...

That being said... Gems are truly...truly, truly Outrageous.

  3. I agree, they should have varying gem types. I'd like to see them involved in making some of the end-game weapons and armor. I'd love to see them used for enhancing armor / weapons, like adding extra effects (in a pseudo-diablo style).

I'm glad that there aren't many stereotypical gemstones in the game at the moment. Too many people would be tempted to make them into sources of magic and other ill-fitting nonsense.

Though they would be pretty, especially if we are able to craft building material out of them and said materials interact with light.

Copper Ore, Iron Ore, Titanium Ore. Yes, those are gems.

  7. Might want to have that looked at. Rubium, Violium and Agisalt (I'm relatively sure) are supposed to be metals, which makes Ferozium, Cerulium, and Impervium metals alloys as well.

there's actually an off-topic discussion and a discussion specifically for starbound, and this was in off-topic so i moved it to the starbound-specific subforum :)

Hmm... interesting, what would lead you to decide whether a discussion is topic or off topic? has there ever been a discussion both off starbound, involving starbound and vice versa?

basically if it has nothing to do with starbound, like this conversation we're having, then it goes to the off topic discussion. there's probably been exceptions but nothing comes to mind haha

THAT would be TRULY outrageous! but a good idea nonetheless! (hides all the piles of gold I used to decor my towers) mhm... I could use big gems indeed

I would like them just as treasures you could find by spelunking and sell for a hefty price. Then again, there could be other treasures too. Sorry, I like spelunking a lot.

Of course, we could also be able to place them somewhere to show off our wealth...

Thats a pretty idea, I like it. We need more of a... rewarding feeling for our exploring, otherwise it becomes a menial task dedicated to progress thru the game to eventually get at some point where we can enjoy the game without feeling like chores. I wouldnt mind trekking and spelunking and finding something nice to show off and rub on my friends faces. or simply put in as a decoration for my colony. One could keep brainstorming for ages with such subjects!

A good use for gems (aside from selling/decor) could be as a component for crafting sci-staves and laser based tools/weaponry like mining lasers, laser rifles or even lightsaber-esque melee weapons that glow. I also really like the idea of using them as modifiers for gear, like an emerald giving you poison resistance on your armor, sapphire for frost resistance, ruby for fire resistance, etc. Maybe it wouldn't have to be just the gem. It could be a combination of different components, including gems, to produce some sort of item similar to the upgrade module that lets you modify your gear in interesting ways. I'd be down for that.

You Sir took it to the next lvl, but perhaps a bit too complicated for a 2d game I am afraid... it would indeed, be a nice thing to have. your favourite melee armor, stab a couple sockets into it, add a gem for X resist, then add another gem for a combination resist, or perhaps something entirely different. Maybe not impossible, but certainly it wouldnt be a huge scope without taking more and more factors into the equation.

Magical resistances based on gems? Hell to the no.

To be honest, if gems didn't have at least one or two other uses besides money and blocks, I feel like they wouldn't really add anything meaningful to the game. I'm not sure how far CF wants to go with upgrade modules and armor/back items, but I feel like gems could be a part of that in some way. The upgrade module already uses diamonds in its recipe anyways and they can upgrade your back light and ship, so having different modules crafted with different gems that offer different benefits wouldn't really be that far-fetched. What those different benefits would be, I'm not entirely sure, but it certainly would make gems much more desirable if that were the case.

Having gems for the sake of having gems is a no-no in my opinion, so that's why I wanted to share my ideas. Indirectly enhancing weapons and armor with gems might seem stupid to some, but we already have sci staves (which are basically just magic weapons) and drills made of soft/brittle materials like gold and diamonds.

I want gems. To make a house made of rubies. Entirely of rubies.

For real though, it would make sense to have them for crafting the higher weapons. I find already that crafting is a bit simplistic. Like you need a single type of ore to make a full armor or weapon, both of which are clearly more than a suit of plate.
