Hi Everyone, My buddies and I are having a good size bet on who can get all the achievements for the console version first. I am preparing my game plan and was wondering if anyone has any solid recommendations on how to get all of the artifacts reasonably quickly. On the PC version it was taking over a couple hundred hours due to the randomness of the drops. Obviously I want to shave off some time from that. Thanks!
The Pirate perk from fishing combined with magnets and the treasure hunter lure might be a combination to test out. I tried it with just the treasure hunter lure and it was pretty good at getting chests.
There are about half a dozen artefacts that can only be obtained from tilling worm spots on specific maps, with fairly low chances of being found. This is what will determine how long it takes to complete the collection, as there is no real way of speeding this up. There is also no way to savescum this as the contents of each worm spot are determined when the spot is generated. The best you can do is to take the Tracker perk to make it easier to find worm spots when they have spawned, and to unlock those areas that are initially inaccessible as soon as possible. The rest of the artefacts can for the most part best be found via fishing or in the mines. As nevyn pointed out above, you can boost your chance of treasure chests with the right perks/gear.
First off, let's take a look at how artifacts drop, then we'll see how to optimize things. There's five basic ways to get artifacts: * Digging worm spots in various locations, different locations have different items * Digging in the cave/skull cave where there is dirt * Fishing chests * Killing monsters * Omni Geodes Now, just like with fishing, different regions will produce different artifacts. The Chipped Amorpha, for example, can ONLY be obtained via digging a worm spot in town. So with this, we have some things we can do to maximize odds of getting artifacts: * Spend a lot of time down in the mines. Killing things, digging up dirt areas, these have good chances to get a broad selection of artifacts, and is probably where a bulk of your artifacts come from * Dig up every single worm spot you come across, particularly in unusual locations. Sometimes you'll get clay, sometimes stone, sometimes seeds... and rarely, an artifact. This is particularly important out in the Desert where a few items can only be obtained. * Beachcombing. There's artifacts unique to being dug up on the beach. Hit it every day, and while you're at it, pick up all the foragables for some extra cash. * Pirate perk for fishing plus a Treasure Hunter bobber is never a bad idea. This will maximize your chances of getting chests, which in turn will maximize your odds of getting artifacts. * On Wednesday, you can purchase Omni-Geodes from Sandy for 1,000 a pop, unlimited quantity. Spend a few hundred thousand here, and get yourself a ton of stuff. Also a good way to ensure you get a prismatic shard in short order. In 1.1, the Forest farm will also have dig spots, I've gotten both the Chicken Statue and the Rusty Spur from them on my farm, which are normally rare drops from fishing. So simply choosing the right map to play on can help. Artifacts also have a higher chance of showing up in fishing chests if you have all the books, which is just more incentive to dig up every worm spot you come across.
I'm seeing a page in the wiki that Krobus sells omni-geodes on Tuesdays for 300 gold a pop. I never saw that item with him, but I may have hit him on other days of the week. Likely a single omni geode. Sandy has tons. Nice side effect of buying omni-geodes, Honeydaddy: you have a slim chance of also finding a prismatic shard. Bring that to the center of the three pillars in the desert, and you'll get the Galaxy Sword. Plus, iridium ore.
You can only buy one Omni-Geode from Korobus on Tuesday, you can buy them in bulk from Sandy on Wednesday. Besides, the Oasis is easier to unlock than the Sewer, since you need artifacts to donate to unlock the sewer to begin with.
Only some of the artifacts may be obtained in this manner. You won't be getting any of the fossils or skeleton parts this way, for example.
Thanks for agreeing with what I wrote. There's only one point I'd add, which I'd just implied above: that this isn't either/or. I don't think I ever mentioned a comparison, and both Krobus and Sandy will always be around to help customers on their appropriate days. Honeydaddy, as long as you've completed the required conditions, you can hit them both up for omni-geodes.
If it helps, I'm in my first winter on this save and I'm getting quite a few artifacts from the worm dig spots - there's a lot of them this time of year so make the most of it!
I found lots of rare artifacts simply by hoeing those giant patches of dirt in the mines. Bone Flute, Strange Doll, and two of the Dwarf Scrolls were found that way. Using an iridium hoe is recommended and awesome. Mass-buying omni geodes will help you get all the minerals quickly. Mass-fishing will help you get the fish-specific artifacts quickly. However, you will soon discover that it all comes down to the final two or three elusive artifacts, almost certainly ones that can only be found in odd locations like the desert, and you will be praying to R.N.Jesus every time you find a worm. In my first game I had all the artifacts by Year Three, except ONE, the damn cursed Palm Fossil. Played for another five to six years where I scoured the spawn locations each day, going whole months where I did nothing but look for worms, and NEVER found it. Other people have similar stories with other elusive artifacts. So it's really gonna come down to luck in the end.
Thanks so much for the feedback, you guys are awesome. This will help me get my strategy in place. My game plan in year one is to focus on setting up money earning operations and ensuring I get every recipe that I can and raising heart levels when opportunities exist. I figure year 2 can be the clean up for fishing, farming, and mining achievements. Other than the artifacts and recipes, are there any other achievements I should be worried about being missable?
You won't miss anything, the only thing you really have to keep up with is the Cooking Channel since recipes are shown every other year - so if you miss one in year 1, you'll have to wait til year 3 to catch it again. Year 2 plays again in year 4, etc. Everything else is pretty much up to you. Grandpa's evaluation will score you at the end of year 2 based on certain things you've achieved but even if you don't get a perfect score you won't be penalized in any way and you will be able to try again at any point you feel ready. This game is really very forgiving.
It's possible to miss getting the Cookie recipe from Evelyn's 4 heart event, if you pick the wrong option, which would then stop you from getting the cook one of every recipe achievement. It's possible that this may also occur with Robin's 6 heart event which gives you the crafting recipes for the drum and flute blocks, which would lock you out of getting the craft one of every item achievement. In either case it should be pretty obvious which option in the event won't give you the recipe. Also you can only get one of the 2 achievements for dealing with the community centre, in a single playthrough, depending on which route you take. Otherwise there are no achievements tht should become impossible to achieve, they may just take time such s waiting for the TV to cycle around to giving you a recipe you missed the first time, or waiting for the season to come around again to catch a specific fish.
Word of warning -- if you put an item in one of the community center bundles, and then buy the JojaMart membership, it will lock you out of *both* achievements. I don't think it's possible to ruin Robin's drum/flute block cutscene. It's true that if you badmouth Evelyn's cookies she'll refuse to give you the recipe, but there is a tiny chance of finding the recipe in a trash can. (I think.)
Well yeah, there's that but I mean in terms of achievements and quests. lol I've never died in the mines, I forget that's a thing. >u<
Think of it as an incentive. As Confucius said, "He who plays poker with flying serpents til late wakes up with a very light wallet."
