i was just wondering after watching a vid saying you cannot landing on gas giants

is it possible to land on them eventually or not at all ??

Why would we be able to land on gas giants? They're made of gas, and we'd be crushed if we tried to land on them. I believe they're just there so that people can harvest resources from them in their spaceship.

I would highly doubt it. Considering that gas giants are essentially a very late atmosphere and a small but dense core, eventually you would get to the point where the gases were so dense that you could walk on them, but you couldn't really dig into it, as it is a fluid. (Imagine "digging a hole" into the ocean with a bucket) so there really wouldn't be much to gain from going there.

IRL, gas giants have many moons, as their mass is large enough to attract various asteroids and clump them together.
(Most many-mooned giants have rings, Ex. Saturn)

So the real benefit of gas giants is that they have many planetoids, while alone, insignificant, but within close enough proximity, quite a feat to explore.

There are also several instances of gas giants being manual refueling stations in games (See: ProspectorRL). Granted, the gas would have to have the properties of a fuel, but hey, it's a game.

So gas giants probably have no direct use, but have promise to either be fuel dumps or moon-magnets.

That, and it would be pretty awesome to be able to jump around on the rings of the planet if you couldn't survive within it. =D

You are aware that gas giants are not solid, and cannot be physically landed on, right?

arn't rings just small particulars of broken ice...I mean that is what Saturn's rings are, they are not a solid flat plain. Though as a scifi game one can make the rings be whatever they want.

and yet the way you described it makes it sound like fun, now i want to try to dig a hole with a bucket.

Also gas giants are garbage planetoid collectors, i mean like how many moons does Saturn have, and we seem to keep finding more.

Technically you could, provided you could survive the insane climate to reach a depth where the gasses begin to solidify via intense gravitational pull.

Which would be, why hopping around the rings would be fun. =p

Gas Giants are formed from the lightest materials, that's why they're giant. That means they have almost nothing valuable ( such as gold ).

Personaly, I would like to have the option of building a floating station over the planet were I could land and refuel. After all, it's all good to say that you can use them to refuel, but how do you actually get the fuel out of them? So think like some of those Star-Wars planet like Ord Ibanna (wookiepedia it if you need to know). And mostly, I want to find some planets that already have such things built on them, either old and abandoned or inhabited floating cities.

Do I sense a "yo mama" novakid joke here?

There was a thread on this a while ago. Here is it summed up...

-It would be cool ot make mining stations such as the city in the sky from metroid or from star wars that float inside gas giants mining up the gases.

    - Gas giants do in fact, have a surface you can land on. It's just theoretically impossible.

    - Off the subject above, some gas giants are just giant seas below the clouds and not solid.

    - Off the two above, some gas giants are so massive that their solid core actually ignites and starts fusion, becoming a mini-star (the brown dwarf).

lots of other nerdy talk happened on what it would be cool to do with gas giants. here is the thread http://community.playstarbound.com/...ng-and-artificial-planets-be-an-option.14039/

Floating cities are completely impossible though. Remember that the gases surrounding the planet are its atmosphere, and you can't get an orbit in the atmosphere because of fluid friction.

Say that to Star-Wars :sneaky:. I dont think we are carring much for how possible it is anyway otherwise we would be shooting down half the game already. The point is, that would give another possibility for environement were you have to build up everything and a fall is instantly fatal. This kind of base would require high amount of offworld ressource since you can probably not find anything that you can use on site to build, unless you manage to extract and use "Solid gaz" à la Civilisation 2 Test of Time. Then again, probably impossible to do until you have invested great amount of ressources on the base already. You could then make some sort of capsule to lower yourself into the atmosphere and then Surprise! a city enclosed in a very powerfull and very ancient force field is found!

I could probably go on and on all night with possibility.

As much as I love those movies, Star Wars is full of inaccurate science. There's no sound in space. There is no oxygen, so fire can't exist. Because of the lack of air resistance, you couldn't pilot a ship with as acrobatic maneuvers as what happens in Star Wars, the ship would retain its momentum in the original direction it was going. And also, why do the space-ships have wings?

As to the last one they are almost all capable of in atmosphere flight. Without a large control surface flight in atmosphere is pretty difficult to maintain. Possible reasons for extra-atmosphere could be for increase maneuverability by placing thrusters further out from the center of thrust. By placing the weapons at the wing tips you also achieve a larger field of fire.

But none of them are designed like that and all other arguments are fully valid.

Anyway, a possible cloud city solution lies in making one neutrally buoyant with plenty of maneuvering thrusters placed about. Finding a place to safely put it though is a larger issue due to the wind speeds being high enough to scour flesh from bone. And the gravity. I'm unsure as to what the perceived pull would be but I can't imagine it being Earthlike. So, yeah... pretty unfeasable. Especially given that it's atmosphere is likely composed of hydrogen, methane, and helium. You'd need either gigantic bladders filled with hydrogen or some pretty serious anti-gravity tech. Overall seems too foolish a venture to seriously attempt for any reason other than research.

Raaah darnit... cannot find anything about it anywere. I truly liked the description they made in Civ 2 ToT in the scy-fi mode. The planet Nona was a gas giant were remains of an old civilisation could be found in the form of platform floating above the atmosphere. No, I am pretty sure that this , like 99% of fiction, could not be explained with solid scientifical notion. Dont care, the game was great and the world they built was interesting. The game also hinted that more could be found inside the atmosphere but no tech you could ever develop in game could allow you to get to them. These were only part of the lore found in the civilopedia.

Aliens that resemble the basic shape of Humans is also inaccurate science. As is random weapons scattered around a universe.
Starbound is already inaccurate. I love how people try to incorporate "real" science into the game when it's called "science fiction" for a reason. xD
