Gas Giants Done Right

The following are screenshots from a game called warframe. It's a grindy mmo about space ninjas and stuff, that's not mportant. What's pertinent here is that it's set in our solar system, and it has levels set on all the planets, including the gas giants.

Most of the level consists of indoor areas, corridors, stairwells and stuff, with the kind of solid atmosphere of a spaceship. But there's lots of windows, and a few points where you actually walk out into exposed air. The whole structure is suspended in Jupiter's atmosphere (floating stuff would be relatively easy in a gas giant, due to the denser atmosphere)

This last one is taken from an open area. The space isn't flooded with gas though, possibly suggesting some kind of shield around the structure.

  4. Probably not all gas giants should have this, rather a select few of them should. But, I'm all for this idea.

granted, but there aren't many plausible alternatives to floating structures. iirc gas giants have a liquid core, and no real solid mass to speak of, or to land on. the main reasons to go there would be to harvest rare gases, and you kind of need something to walk around on.

Of course, there is still room for variation. Sometimes these floating facilities could be fully manned, populated and guarded. Sometimes they could be abandoned but functional, maybe with the shielding turned off making outside trips hazardous.; And maybe they could be completely derelict and full of holes, causing rooms to randomly crumble and be depressurised <3

of course, background palette swaps will totally happen too, since they're not all yellow. but chucklefish is already good at that.

i want to be able to build this on a gas giant.

Really hope this is a possibility eventually.

Given how RNG-heavy it is and the complete lack of a proper tutorial that explains mods, fusing, building weapons/frames using blueprints, etc. Then there's the whole Damage 2.0 as described here: http://warframe.wikia.com/wiki/Damage_2.0

You can only have one primary, secondary, and melee weapon equipped. The starting weapon, the MK-1 Braton does almost purely Slash damage, it's Impact and Puncture are less than 4 damage a piece I think, making it only good against Infested, but now Infested only spawn during Invasion events or in the Orokin Derelict or Dere-Lag Void if you will. Once you get your starting weapons to Rank 30, you buy BPs for other weapons (or get them through drops for specific enemies) and get those up to Rank 30, a Frame can stay at rank 30 since they never really change. It's been in open beta for nearly an entire year and RNG has just gotten worse even though DE (Digital Extremes, the creators of Unreal, a 21 year old company) have said they are working on it. The pricing for platinum goods are getting insane lately. The What Stalker? pack, which is little more than a color pack and some weapon skins runs upwards of $40 when you run the USD-to-Platinum ratios. Best thing to spend platinum on is just Warframe and Weapon slots.

Oh, the enemies under the Damage 2.0 table that have diverse and conflicting resistances and weaknesses? All three factions show up in the Void as the Corrupted, sporting literally almost all forms of armor/shields/health that you need to counter with only a few types. The metagame went from using Armor Ignoring damage (enemies used to have effective hitpoints in the millions otherwise, old Infested would start off taking 200% extra damage from fire, but due to armor scaling, it would end up as only taking 0.002% damage from fire, or less than 1 damage) to remain even useful in later planets and alerts. Now the meta has simply shifted to a few of the weaker but universal damage types or just really powerful shotguns sporting all three damage types in large numbers.

The lore is very lacking as well, even the codex here is miles ahead of the codex there. You need to check out posts in the General and Gameplay Feedback section to get an idea of how Warframe has so much potential, but how that potential is going to waste. At this point, I am truly unsure of which would be a worse game to play: Warframe or Defiance.

Still, the Jupiter tilesets are pretty cool, even if the Anti MOAs can go die in a fire for all I care what with all the crazy knockback their explosive projectiles can cause.

As you can see, I have a bit of a bitter history with this game since last Easter.

On a more serious note, what is it about gas giants that you like the most? Do you like the foggy/cloudy atmosphere, or the lack of a "ground" surface? Or, do you want them to require a Survival System mk II, and be home to only civilizations? AKA, skycities.

If you're going to go so far as to say the planet is dense enough to float structures, lets talk about how it would completely crush everything and would instantly blow it all over the place? It's a cool idea and everything but I don't see the reason it needs to be a gas giant, as those are incredible inhospitable. The Avian floating crystals could easily be used to make floating structures on any planet, and would follow their desire to fly. I mean, what are you looking for, do you just want gas giants to be places you can go to cause you can't now? Or do you want to be able to have floating structures. The former I think is a little silly and the latter I agree with but is doable without gas giants.

...But... Floaty cities on gas giants are awesome. And yes, gas giants are useless for now so we need SOMETHING to do with them :D

About the environment on gas giants, they might be inhabitable when thinking in realistic way... But we also survive on moons and asteroid fields just by holding our breath. I'm not a physicist but I can say that we'd need more than just our clothes to survive in void for more than few seconds.

Of course, these structures should be rare and if we had something like these, on-ground cities etc. should exist too.

You think gas giants that can cook you, poison you, crush you or any other horrible death they can inflict is the same as being on the moon or in space ;/ .

Nope, I just pointed out that being in void in Starbound isn't very realistic, so why should gas giants be? I don't play Warframe, but those pictures were cool. And of course, I still remember Bespin from Star Wars.

Hm? I already said I'm not much of a physicist and I don't actually know how do gas giants act, but why should they be harmful? For the realism?

Of course you can survive in airless, cold environment if you just hold your breath.
