Bug/Issue Game not starting properly

The title may be misleading. I am able to start the game up and get all the way to the character selection screen but that's when the problems arise. When I click on my preferred character, the game kind of freezes for about a minute before getting to the loading screen (the spinning Protectorate logo). After going through the spinning animation for a few seconds, the game freezes. Actually correction, my computer seems to freeze and my mouse seemed to have disappeared. (It seems likely since when it was 18:07 on my phone, the monitor still displays 18:02). After a long time, my mouse appeared back on screen and regained the ability to move. Though when I tried to click on things such as other software, it didn't do anything on my computer. After i clicked on the Starbound window a lot (its still frozen at this point) hoping that something would happen. Somehow my mouse did start working again miraculously and everything went back to normal. Starbound went back to loading. Yet even after leaving it on for 10 minutes, it was still on the loading screen. I kinda gave up at this point and the only way to close the game was to repeatedly press the X button until the "End Process" window came up.

I was playing around with the assets before this but i put that in a separate folder though was able to play the game under these circumstances before. I have no mods installed on starbound. Please Help

    Got any logs?

While it's an easily made mistake to accidentally leave modded files around in a place Starbound tries to load, modding a few things doesn't commonly freeze your entire system all of a sudden.

Am I correct this problem started for you with the 1.2 patch?

The game doesn't crash so I don't get the crash logs though I must ask, do the crash logs appear when the game closes?
I've thoroughly looked through the files in Starbound and can confirm the Mod isn't within one of he files so it's most likely not the problem.
No actually, I've had this problem for over a month and after trying my own methods to try and fix it, I decided it'd be much easier to just ask people who have more experience with these things. I've had this after 1.0 (though not immediately when it updated. I've played a lot of 1.0 so I don't think it's anything to do with the update).

I was just away for 41 minutes and there's two of you now? Or I may be seeing double.

*cough* anyway, the game tries to generate logs simultanous to your playing. They are put into the "storage" folder in your Starbound installation location. The ones with numbers 1-5 at the end are also logs, they are simply backups from the 5 previous times you played. They can be opened by any text editor no matter if Windows complains about it. And Starbound_Server.log is only relevant if you run the server application for the game yourself on the same pc.

The log starts being written the moment you start the game, so crashing etc. only negatively effects the info there in the most rare cases.

PS: Firing up the server is often a faster and easier method of checking for errors, as you'll be shown the log immediately and usually get a more "clear" error message - at least faster and more clear than unexplained crashing and having to browse for starbound.log

Yes, I have duplicated. Don't Tell Anyone xD.

Should I just paste the last log?
Also which is the most recent?

The one without a number is the most recent one.

If you paste the log, inside a spoiler tag please - uploading it is always preferred.

Hopefully this helps. I don't know the specifics but things like "[18:02:43.362] [Warn] Failed to deserialize entity: (ObjectException) No such object named 'foodbowl'" or "[18:01:12.892] [Info] Root: Detected asset source named 'base' at '..\assets\packed.pak' [18:01:12.892] [Info] Root: Detected unnamed asset source at '..\assets\user'" seem odd to me.

That warning is most common when you had a mod installed adding an item, then you uninstalled that mod. In this case, however, that's a vanilla item. The pet food bowl you can buy at Terramart. Strangely, that seems to have been removed in 1.2
At least I cannot find any foodbowl in the 1.2 assets in it's original location (packed.pak - \objects\generic\foodbowl) it might be renamed.

But: That error is usually harmless, it usually only means the object in question is removed from your savegame. As an object, it simply disappears. As an item in your inventory, it turns into a "perfectly generic item" as a failsafe to prevent errors.

That, "packed.pak" is an archive containing the game's base assets, perfectly normal.

That... should be a pseudo-mod which handles your custom songs, the ones you can play with music instruments. ABC files.

    1.)
There is only one line here that is out of place in my eyes:
[18:01:15.286] [Error] OpenGL errors this frame: GL_INVALID_VALUE

    2.)
People will tell you this is a problem, especially appearing after patch 1.2
[18:01:14.852] [Info] detected maximum OpenGL texture size 8192, using atlasNumCells 256

However, while people surely have a point to mention this, especially related to weak systems, I get this line too on a system that runs Witcher3 on ultra, lag-free, so it is clear that this line is neither necessarily related to weak systems, nor does it necessarily cause problems.

    3.)
What is the rest of your PC's specs?
I am unsure about [18:01:14.743] [Info] OpenGL version: '2.1.0 - Build 8.15.10.2900' vendor: 'Intel' renderer: 'Intel(R) HD Graphics' shader: '1.20 - Intel Build 8.15.10.2900'

I suppose this means you have an APU. Processor with integrated GPU ?

    1. So what does that mean?

    2. So is it a problem?

After looking up what an integrated GPU is, I can safely say I most likely have one.

1.) I don't know, which is the main reason why this is my main focus here ATM

2.) Not necessarily, so everything else is something we should check first.

3.) Heh, forgive me for using vague terms. I much prefer being able to check the problematic system IRL, but this is just the internet after all.

    In any case:
3 Gigabytes of RAM? Curious, odd numbers among RAM are a rare sight, and to be honest, 3 GB is quite low in today's age. Buuuuuut.... RAM modules are relatively cheap nowadays, too.
Starbound may be a lightweight game, but today, even the background processes of windows alone use up an entire Gigabyte or more. Depending on what else you run on your system, this *can* be a problem.

This is, sadly, quite familiar to other complaints I saw both here, and from my steam friendlist: A (seemingly) slightly weak-in-terms-of-hardware system, having trouble with patch 1.2

I am talking to people and checking logs roughly 3 times per day, but ATM it still seems to be an actual issue with 1.2, from my ignorant viewpoint.
Simply because too many report the same thing.

Totally unrelated to Starbound, but you might want to upgrade those RAM.
I got my 16GB DDR3 when DDR3 was completely new and overpriced, and it was still only, let's convert it.... about 60 dollars for 8 GB. Must be significantly cheaper nowadays, and DD3 is still suitable for high-end performance nowadays....

So is it a problem with my low RAM? If so I'd happily go get a new one to fix it if you can point me in the right direction (heh I was also surprised by the odd numbering).

Ah no, that was just some general advice, ever since about the time Windows 7 appeared, RAM usage spiked up quite a bit overall, and it might do you well to upgrade that a little as it's fairly cheap.

For your Starbound issue, I'm afraid I'm still mostly theorizing. You see, you are far from the only one running into such issues since 1.2, and obviously, it is still a bit of a riddle now, else someone else would already have come here to correct me / give you the advice you need ;)

Actually I have been experiencing these problems before 1.2

Oh, now that is important info!

In that case, It is safe to say that it is related to hardware and/or your system.

Pretty much a copy-paste solution but it should always be the first: drivers, etc, are all up to date?
Experience issues in any other game or application?

  15. Glayce

    Glayce Master Chief

May I know how I check whether my drivers etc are up to date?

Also no other application has displayed such behaviour

Huff, according to your log, you use steam. If you want, I can add you there and help out - it seems your PC system can use a little tending overall !
Else this topic here will seem more like a chatwindow :nurugasp:
