Future updates - Will they wipe Characters?

Couldn't find a thread on this so I'm sorry if it has already been discussed.

From the latest update our existing characters were deleted and I'm fine with that as we were told beforehand, however I want to know if this will possibly happen again in future updates. Whilst I am currently enjoying Starbound so far, I don't want to dedicate hours of my gaming to a character that could possibly be deleted in the future! If any one has any information at all that'd be great!

Yes, it will possibly happen in future updates. It's been said by Tiy before even releasing the game that if you don't want to lose your save or your progress you shouldn't play this early in the beta. The beta is going to be used to flesh the game out and is going to in turn change a lot.

Characters do not get wiped. They become invalid when data that they carry in them becomes incompatible with the game. If you really want to keep your characters, turn off the update feature in steam and just play on the build you have until you want to get updated.

The other option is to just wait until the Devs finish making game sweeping changes and are down to just tweaking, or..... wait for the game to be released.

You'll have to play Starbound on whatever version that character is from, thought. You'll be missing out on the updates and content and other stuff.

 

Yes. It's by design. Anytime a major change occurs that is incompatible with the old code, there is a chance characters will have to be wiped.

Chucklefish doesn't WANT to wipe your data, it's just sometimes the easiest way for them to update the game. If they can release an update without a wipe, I'm sure they'll take that route. It's about what makes sense from a development standpoint.

That is a reasonable thought, but the only way to ensure you won't lose what you build is by waiting for the full version. (or not updating). In the meantime, just have fun, make some practice buildings, etc

 

well ok then. this isn't my first beta so I sort of foresaw this happening.
