Anyone else having the ultimate desire to stash everything like a packrat, now that there may not be anymore character/ship wipes?

It started off as crappy weapons I'd find. Made a crate on my homeworld. Well, it became full, so I found a few chests. A chest or two on the floor of the ship. Then the floor became full. Then I made platforms, a second level for chests. No, not enough.

I began searching and found laboratory lockers, nice stackable containers. Oh, the horror. One row, then two. Those lights along the ceiling? THEY'RE IN THE WAY. Floor-to-ceiling storage, now that's what I'm talkin' about. Only enough space to place a Refinery.

Bombs? Top-right locker. Throwing needles? Sure, they go in there. Perfectly Generic Item (IT'S A FISH)? Why not. Rotten apple? I'll save it for later, so in you go. Old armor, eight pairs of scientist glasses, bunch of single-digit damage weapons from my Alpha Sector journey? It's all there.

I wish I could capture a pet rat, it'd be a perfect edition. Let it scamper around my belongings and leave behind little pellets to accentuate my hoarding style. And yes, those pellets will be stored, by golly. Dang, I sure hope there's some sort of recycling mechanism for leftover weaponry...

i dont save common weapons except guns. i have everyone ive found so far. over 160 now and counting. vanities i just save 1 of each. about 50+ wearables and 20 or so instruments. and of course lots of furniture. i have over 100 of those small starage lockers but like 75 of them are empty.

i'll be the odd one out.

    no.

i pay careful attention to the keyword "may" in the statement "may be no more wipes".

even if no more wipes was "guaranteed" i probably wouldent actively hoard till after release. that is not to say i dont do a little hoarding.... i do save all vanity items, throwing weapons, and seeds/crops. i also stash away blocks i'll be building with. oh, and i have this strange compulsion to smelt all sand i get into glass.

packrat to a point. I don't keep every duplicate outfit piece I come across; ok maybe an extra set, but beyond that I only keep weapons I have used or just simply like the name of. I don't pick up very many weapons...armor I keep when I retire them. I love to collect all the outfits/vanity & décor stuffs. That is not to mention building materials. So I mainly only have enough room for a few of the crafting/smelting devices.

So my ship always ends up a locker hold of some kind with gaps where the devices go. At least the campfire I can place under the initial storage unit. Mainly just to not waste space that is under the default unbreakable objects...

The life of a builder; wonder what my ship will look like when upgrades come out....lol

Lol, I am surprised no one else does this... I have made a character from each race which has corresponding housing on a planet. As I grand theft everything off planets I store it all in the house for that race. Then I come in with the race character and store all the items on the ship. Muah ha ha! Pack rattinest!

^ This is a lot of what I do. Tho I have 2 full stacks of glass now, and I just kinda stopped making more since, If I need more than that later, well, a 10-20+ furnaces smelting sand at one time will get me some if I TULY need it. I'm not convinced about the safety of the wipe-free game we are supposed to be having now, either.

^ This, too. I'm still on my starting alpha homeworld, and I took over one of the emptied mining camps, for its wide-open space, partial underground, and lots of storage stuff early on. I still use a lot of the 9slot crates that made up the majority of them, all I did was relocate the stacks to a more central area. I built a small, squre little house, mostly for the npc villager I spawned once, but after it died wasn't replaced, I just started moving in decent storage for costumes, instruments, extra techs/blueprints, foods, seeds, and other things that I really like. I'm about ready to move off this planet and start building a new base, but I'm still looking for that ideal one.

    Hoarding is unhealthy.

I do tear down dungeons and keep all the blocks form them, however. Because once world wipes aren't happening anymore I want to build things. Grand things. Even now, I've built a small bunker under a hill on a meteor planet out of pressurized steel.

Also like to keep vanity items and old armor sets so I can mess around with my appearance, but that's about it.

I don't get why you'd keep old, useless, weapons or shields. Or duplicate vanity items. I throw out all but one of any vanity items, maybe two if I really like them so I have a spare for new characters.

But, like, you're never gonna use those things. Why would you keep them?

i can see saving a weapon a tier so you can collect any pets you may want, but that's a bit excessive.
why spend much time? just find a place with acceptable weather and background. perhaps its my time in dwarf fortress that made me strong vs. tedium, but i'm leveling mountains and excavating large sections of ground for my city. my glass has come in handy for the backwalls of my buildings, metals are expensive, yo.

Yes I'm a total hoarder in the games that I play that allow it. Funny because at home I live very minimalistic and don't like stuff all over the place.

It's only made worse in this game as I made the same planet the homeworld of all my characters and send them over there to dump all their stuff in our communal home, since I use the print and pack mod it allows me 100 item wall lockers and all that I've got (and I've got a lot) are full of everything from all my characters except one that keeps all his stuff in his own private wall lockers on board his ship since he uses a modded ship that offers plenty of room for that.

Hell I'm so much of a hoarder in the game that I won't even play a character race if I've not modded in a big enough ship to hold plenty of lockers and chests to hold everything that I find. i figure that there will likely be some day that I build a base and really want some specific item that I've seen in my travels and what-do-you-know, there it is in locker 3680.

I'm really only not settling now cuz, as I agree with you about the lack of faith in a wipe-free future pre-release, I am currently helping someone on this forum search for their ideal homeworld. I find it kind of fun because it gives me a goal while I am out there looking for... whatever. And I'm not in terrible need to settle down, just keeping an eye out for places that I like. I keep some weapons because they go with certain vanity sets well, or because I may not have found any quite like them yet. Or maybe because they were used by me for so long, i've kinda grown attached to them. Also, I think there will be mannequins in the game, well, I hope there will, so saving some extra sets of clothing or armor is something i'm doing a little bit of. On that note, a while back I got the captain's cap (looks like a police hat) and I couldn't find any decent set gear to go with it. I just ended up finding one of the clothing merchants with the right blue color schemed and ended up looking like a beat cop. Found a nightstick on some npc long ago, too.

BTW, D-16, I can't help but think that your Avatar is a Golden Megatron in a Golden Bathysphere (from Bioshock) going down to wreak havoc upon Rapture.

the guy looking for a desert with glowing rain and pools of water? i'd actually help on that if i was updated, but i'm still on angry koala.

my avatar is indeed gold megatron, it has been for many years, and shows no sign of stopping. the "bathysphere" is actually a little injoke from homestuck. i think next week i might switch to one of my other golden megatrons.

after checking, it turns out i hoard more than i thought i did. not to the extent of keeping "useless" items like outgrown weapons (i did, however save my rubium legs because they look nice with the santa jacket). still, a lot more "junk" than i realized i had. and none of it furniture!

Yep, the guy looking for, essentially, a golden oasis planet. It's a nice idea for a home planet, the more I think about it. We have found several that meet most criteria, tho there always ends up being a lack of water. I think he is looking for the lucky oasis mini-biomes to be included. I'm sure something will end up meeting his standard. The hunt is fun.

BTW, if you are able to change your avatar, please let me know via message. I tried changing mine (I just grabbed a slightly less-used Ash from Army of Darkness pic I found on google images for mine, but not a My Little Pony fan) but, after reading some posts in a thread in this forum that I can't remember where, they are trying to fix some bug that lets you change avatars. I guess we're currently stuck with whatever we chose initially atm.

I got the hoarding bad. Not the weapons, but building materials and tradeskill materials? sure. Recipes? oh yes. Clothes, you betcha. Though i have 4 spawner cheffs, all food get stored (except for rotten apples).
I got 2 brown crates with grey sprite stones by now, mainly cobblestones. They did not look like that when i farmed them, they don't stack together though they have identical sprites.... . My mind insists that the difference will one day be visible, the grey stuff must be valuable!
I limit myself to one or two extra sets of the clothes I find. I force myself to toss looted weapons, but i am too sentimental to do the same to my crafted ones. I curse that the hitchhikers backpack is only for show, I want more bagslots!
I got a few stacks of ores in my ships storage.
The way i figure, no more character wipes, I belive them! No unirverse wipes? Thats just crazy. Hyotl and those gas dudes need their worlds, more human stuff needs to added. Storing most of my treasure in crates, dressers, closets, bookshelfs and fridges on a planet alows me to feel sane. I do however fret it will be destroyed ; )

Someone responded to my lack of faith in universe wipes in another thread a few days ago stating that, If they do change something about the overall appearance of a planet that you have already altered in some way, it's possible to do so without changing what you've altered. Even if this type of "surgical" data-terraforming is possible ( i know nothing of code ), I don't think it will come without some losses in some way. I've not really grown too attached to my "stuff" at this point, so it won't be too bad if it does happen. Besides, since furious koala update, i've still only made one character. I've yet to begin a permadeath one, or even use the "mid-grade gas" version of losing all your items upon death. I'm playing in normal ( creative mode? ) still and just fine, but will make more than one eventually.

Also, according to the wiki, if you click on Planets link, the first paragraph ends with "There are 12.667 quadrillion planets able to be generated within the game currently, with 422.22 quadrillion planned."

Numbers like that make me feel soooooo... insignificant:notworthy:
