Functional Mechanic of a Gunsword

    I can see gunswords being unique weapons. They have the possibility of being a sword and a gun at the same time.

    Now, I see these working best one way.

    First of all, they'd be two handed weapons. This would give us access to BOTH the left and right click, since we don't have to worry about dual wielding.

    Second, left click would always be melee, right click always ranged. Why? Just keep everything nice and uniform.

    Now, for some suggested Gunsword weapons...

    1.) The Electronic Greatsword

    Giant sword you carry around with you. Up close you swing for powerful hits of higher damage, but it's slower to attack with. That would be pretty uniform for ALL greatswords.

    The range attacks would vary as follow, and would all use energy.

    Burst Attack - Hold right click to charge up a ball of energy that is released upon letting go. High damage low moving projectiles, or low damage spammed projectiles when you rapidly click. The projectile could also cause tile damage on collision.
    Interruptable Laser Attack - Holding down right click fires a laser in the direction of the mouse. While an enemy is hit by a laser they take small amounts of damage VERY rapidly. It wouldn't be piercing. So it would do probably half the damage of the melee attack in the same period of time, due to it being ranged.
    Focus Laser Attack - Same as the Burst Attack, but it's instant moving. It pierces all of its targets, but doesn't do as much damage as the burst attack would do.

    2.) The Dagger Pistols

    These guys are automagically grouped into a two handed category, even though they're technically two gunswords.

    Melee attack - Rapid short-range swings that deal moderate damage. You can just hold down the button please.

    Ranged attacks - All using either energy or bullets for ammo, up to you guys. I would make them all bullets personally, just to differentiate the weapons.

    Automatic - Holding down right click would fire as if it were an automatic weapon.
    Burst - Clicking gives a burst of three-five bullets.
    Semi-Automatic - You have to click for each shot.
    Grenade Launcher - Lobs a grenade. The grenade would possibly damage terrain. It wouldn't be SUPER DUPER high damage.

    3.) The Slingshot Sword

    This is the final kind of gunswordish weapon I could think of. Kind of like the dagger pistols as far as equipping goes.

    Melee attack - Think scimitars or katanas. That basic idea. Holding down the button goes back and forth, swinging one weapon then the next.

    Ranged attack - You throw one of the weapons, and it comes back to you (pierces enemies). When you've thrown one of them you can still use the other to melee, or you can throw both of them and be out of a weapon until they return.

    One more mechanic I'd like to mention, I'd really appreciate it if we saw blocking in this game. Blocking would be done by greatswords and weapon like that which are two handed but have no ranged attack. The right click would be a blocking blow instead, and it would have a larger knockback than the regular attack. Nice for keeping enemies kind of juggled.

    as long as one finds a way to represent in game how clunky and bulky it be to mixing gun & sword *shrugs* why not.

    They would make the hole thing to easy
    and y do you think the combat system is the same like terraria?

    I don't, I just remember reading somewhere that left clicking was main hand, right click off hand. :/

    Also, how would it make it too easy? There's a whole bit of balancing. Gun swords are the jack of both trades, master of none. They'd do slightly less damage than just regular melee weapons and ranged weapons, but for the advantage of having multiple styles. If you wanted to be a pure melee you'd find yourself with a higher DPS up close, and pure range higher DPS at a distance. This gives the same DPS overall, but less at any given scenario. It's more well rounded.

    To add some variety into the weapon system?

    Adding variety to the weapon system???? only for the grenade launcher there are 21.000 types right now!

    Erm, I think you mistake variety of a weapon for variety of weapon TYPES.

    I guarantee you, those 21,000 grenade launchers don't fire in 21,000 different ways.

    Compare it like this:

    What is a greande launcher?

    It's a gun that fires a projectile that usually is effected by gravity, and at some point after been fired will create an AoE of damage.

    ALL of those 21,000 grenade launchers would fall into that category.

    I'm looking to create three new categories.

    I'll add some pictures when I finish making some, or someone else makes me a decent representation. I'm not the best at pixel art from scratch, but I'm giving it a shot.

    At Final Fantasy VIII,they have been called "Gunblades".

    actually the idea of slapping together melee weapons and guns is almost as old as the small arms themself, early examples included flintlock pistols with axeheads under the barrel, so after a shot a user could shift there grip and swing the gun like a short axe. or sabers with strip down pistols attached to the side, with the trigger in the handle, heck one really eyebrow raising example is a punch dagger with two small pistols at each side of the handle, aimed in the direction you punch with it.

    Also as a side note, the gunblades where not really that as the gun part had no barrel to shoot a bullet, it was more about some odd way of adding more unph to the sword swing in some odd, final fantasy fashion.

    *shrugs* because they have gun parts? As for why they have then gun part...yet down shoot them like guns...it´s a Japanese game, it´s among the more down to earth concepts I seen in a Japanese games X3

    funny enough in the cgi animated movie Final Fantasy: Advent Children (a story taking place in the Final Fantasy 7 universe) one of the villains dual wielded two pistols where pretty much the whole barrel was shaped like a really thick, single edge short blade, held and fired like guns but also used in scenes to slice. Most likly added as a reference to FF 8 and the gunblades.

    Well you can dual wield so the fact that it would be 2 handed could hinder it.

    Why would you use a gunsword over just picking up a gun and a sword?
