Let me preface this by saying "I love Starbound." I really do. It's completely lived up to my expectations, and my friends and I have been having a blast exploring our universe. That being said, I do feel a few things could benefit some changes, and without knowing whether or not they're in the works (the mind of a dev is a mysterious thing,) I figured I'd throw out an idea here: Coal. I know this is a big complaint from several people, and just from a sci-fi standpoint, burning it for warp fuel really makes little sense. Even the Sputnik launch wasn't powered by coal. I honestly think that coal, like wood, should be removed as a fuel source entirely. What should replace it? Well... fuel! I really love survival games, and enjoy the survival aspects of Starbound. I look forward to seeing how those aspects grow and evolve. With that in mind, I feel that, as a sole survivor stranded on a lonely planet, it would make sense to actually BE stranded for a good while. Give us a real reason to explore and excavate the initial planet, make us scavenge for resources and survive until we can finally build -- a fuel refinery. Rather than dropping coal, plutonium, etc. directly into the gas tank, create a refining process for actual fuel. Whether it's refined from oil, plants, dilithium crystals, etc. I feel that would make more sense (and be a bit more fun) than the current system. Make moving to the next planet, or solar system, something to really strive for, not something that happens a few minutes into the game after we find a few lumps of coal. (Also, get rid of the Cliff Racers. I still have nightmares from Morrowind.)
I agree with this, however some people still want to get that instant gratification of just dropping any old thing into the gas tank and flying to the stars. I know this is a suggestion for the devs, but because you've suggested it, I do have a mod that allows you to produce fuel through a more refined process. You can check it out here: http://community.playstarbound.com/index.php?resources/spacefuel-tamefoxx.8/ . I'd love to hear your thoughts about it!
