Fuel seems completely redundant.

Telling people to stop complaining during a phase of creation where complaining is vital is a terrible thing to do.

I'm gonna have to somewhat agree with the op. I wouldn't be all that surprised if the fuel mechanic goes away in later patches at later tiers. Sure, you're stranded on a planet and you're dumping coal into your ships furnace for it's good old steam-powered(?) warp drive, but it would make sense that at some point later you can upgrade your ship and/or steal a better ship.

Ugh, no. Just no. There's absolutely no excuse for going to my furnace, smelting my ore, reading a chapter of something, coming back to the computer, and STILL be smelting. It's a pain in the butt already, and adds nothing. All it does is encourage me to do something besides play. The smelting/cooking mechanic adds nothing but a time sink. Upgrade your smelter to smelt higher tier stuff? That's fine. Start with an even slower smelter and upgrade smelter speed? It's just an added level of annoyance without adding anything worthwhile at all. At least you get the satisfaction of a job well done when you do that in real life. Your proposed solution just feels like a much much worse problem than the problem of a game in Beta not having enough progression and infrastructure yet. More stuff to craft? Good. More tiers to progress? Good. Ball breakingly tedious amounts of micromanagement to operate a freaking furnace? Sorry, that's what a JOB is for.

I rather there was something that we could make that makes fuel for the ship over time if we have it stationed on the ship. Let's say something that gives like 1 fuel a minute which is small but if you're busy for 2 hours then you got 120 fuel for free making it easier to go elsewhere without feeling you have to grind for coal. It could also have a possible upgrade way later in the game that gives 2 fuel a minute as well if need be, or just have it as this one item.

I honestly think that something along these lines would make it so people don't feel they have to grind away finding coal or keep having to get 100 coal on every planet they travel to, to make it worth it. This would reward those that rather explore and do other stuff for awhile. Make it a item that you can craft at tier 3 or 4 so you're not given it right away but given it early enough that it's still helpful.

Fueling my ship is a PITA. I've got 50 fuel in it because I wanted to visit a moon. Crafted some torches too. Whoops! BIG MISTAKE! Turns out my starter planet is pretty poor in coal. At least it had gold everywhere! Ah well, I got two more moons to explore. One is bound to cough up more than 50 coal in an hour. This seems more related to drop rate than anything else. Found a few awesome coal deposits right off and....I found some in the obsidian layer. Most the lighting I use I stole from an avian town because I ran out of torches >.< The fact that after those initial deposits, DIAMONDS are proving more common than coal is just weird.

One: Birds ARE too hard right now. You get freaking swarmed, and they're shooting a mix of ice blasts, fire balls, shockwaves, and BLOOD at you. Oh, they also hurt you on the way down when you kill them. They also hit harder than anything else. All this was before I even had armor. The fact that my craftable weapons are actually DOWNGRADES from my starter weapon is just icing on THAT particular cake.

Fall damage ALWAYS sucks. If people weren't complaining about fall damage, I'd be surprised. Combine it with the utterly nasty knockback some enemies have and you're going to get insta-gibbed pretty often until you get tech. Nothing like being knocked off a mountain at night because enemies can hit you with a swarm of flies from a third of a screen away, and send you flying right off the mountain...

Pixels are annoying as shit. I keep circling the world to kill stuff with my sword for pixels. In-game days later, I'm still more limited by pixels than anything else. In this case however, I'm going to lay the blame on the over-abundance of 'rare' materials. I had enough mats for my diamond pick before I had copper armor. Pixels where much less frustrating before the patch where the process of getting enough mats would also likely yield enough pixels.

Wow. Thanks for proving my point. I read this post and this is what I hear: :cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

Why you are even playing this game is beyond me if that's really how you feel. Why not play something else? I disagree with you on ALL points.

This game is based on a RNG so not every planet will have the same resources but coal is totally present in sufficient amounts in general. I have never had a problem fueling my ship with just coal.

I have been playing the patch for about 6 hours and never once have I been killed by a bird. I am not lying about this and I think the birds are just fine the way they are.

Fall damage is great since the last patch and NO not everyone hates fall damage, some people like challenges in their games. The new changes bring another element to the gameplay making you move more deliberately and adding more depth. I wouldn't be opposed to a slight nerf to fall damage but it is great as a game mechanic. It prevents you from running all over the planet willy nilly like some kind of god.

And you somehow find a problem with pixels?!!! I have more than I know what to do with and that will be even more so when you are able to sell your goods.

Again I say, wait for the game to come out and then use your cheat engines and mods. STOP trying to ruin the game for everyone. And for the love of god STOP :cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

I am actually a very nice and reasonable person, anyone who knows me will tell you that. I am however, when needed brutally honest at times and well, the truth often hurts. I wouldn't be brought to this point if there wasn't any just cause but I am shocked at all these people crapping on every aspect of this game.

Have you ever considered that there might be a reason people are crapping on the game? It's not perfect, that's the entire point of this point in development. We're expected to air our grievances about the game and help shape the final product.

Fine, I give up. Nerf this game into a sterile boring oblivion if you want. Vanilla Skyrim was catered to all the casuals and was trash when it came out but sure enough the modders came and turned it into the amazing game that it could have been in the first place. Starbound will be no different. So even if all the baby's get their way the game will be worth playing at some point. Thankfully I'm sure the devs know this and that's why they are coding it with modding in mind.

Hahaha. And that's why we don't submit feeback to you. It's Beta. Things aren't balanced. It's as simple as that. We give feedback, they say "That feedback makes sense" or "that feedback goes against our vision for the game", and proceed accordingly. Lets be honest, birds aren't balanced at all at the beginning of the game. Ergo, a comment that they aren't balanced. The game devs can say "well, we like where birds are, so we should make other enemies harder", or "I like where other enemies are, lets nerf birds", or even "Hahaha, your tears sustain me! Birds stay as is!", and you know, that's alright too. I *LIKE* them mean, vicious, and subsisting on my tears.

Anyways, coal problems have been fixed. I just bounced out to another moon. Good times! I just find it extremely odd how rare coal was after the first couple veins I hits, and commented. Perhaps RNJesus just smacked me, perhaps it's an across the board problem. Feedback is required, because this is BETA. If we keep issues to ourselves, the devs won't know if they screwed something up. Might work just fine on their playthrough because RNG liked them, and screwed other people.

Didn't say they should remove fall damage. Merely pointed out why (almost) everyone hates fall damage, even if they don't think it's a problem. On that note, it IS a problem. I got some buff that increased my jump height, and using pulse jump for a double jump, I actually cause fall damage. Just thought I'd throw that out there. That jump buff needs to increase your tolerance to fall damage, or an across the board increase to your tolerance for fall damage, or a simple "working as intended. Buffs are actually there to kill you in new and interesting (and hilarious, I'll admit I laughed) ways.

And yes. I ran into an issue with pixels. As I stated, it seems pretty well linked to the over-buffed spawn rates of metals. Again, when I circle the entire planet killing for pixels and I'm still shy for crafting, it's a problem. A problem I'm fairly sure will work itself out when they nerf the spawn rates to something less ridiculously awesome.

So why are you so dead set against feedback? There's no reason for an open beta if you don't bring up issues you run into. If you don't want the game easier, talk to the devs, not the players. If the dev vision for the game is for increased difficulty, they'll ignore the calls of "birds are too HARD", and rebalance ground creatures to be as lethal as birds. It's up to the devs to determine "working as intended" or "Yea, we can tweak that".

How about we wait until ship upgrades are implemented (as they are going to be at some point in phase 1) before we start removing features that could potentially be fixed by said upgrades? Just a thought.

well, time sinks arn't the same as grind or micro. you can be doing other things while smelting. Functionally, it's similar to how crops work now.

Imagine that smelters were big ass structures, or groups of structures <wired> together, or even different objects you could establish in series "Incredible Machine" style. Maybe you can't even build them on your ship. It would be a reason to establish a base, and while large scale smelting was going you could go exploring, mining or hunting.

Fuel refineries could work the same way. Perhaps more time sinks than item sinks. Like a 'Hydrogen refinery" that breaks down air/water to make 'free fuel', but slowly.

I like the concept of having to keep refuelling every so often, but currently getting duel in certain quantities is what gets really tedious and boring for me. I know people don't like to hear it, but I very much enjoyed being able to use wood the older way as fuel. If I wanted to travel to a very far planet, I could cut enough trees to get me there and not have to spend an hour looking for coal deposites :(

fuel only matters for the first jump really. past that you'll have so much fuel you couldn't possibly use it all even if you tried. i vote to remove fuel as a mechanic and instead use the OP's idea.
